It wasn’t often that Yamin was awake as late as her sister. Occasionally she saw her drift silently over Ni-Yana to a seemingly random house, then drift back again. More often than not though, it was a secluded spot along the Ra-Lin, near the opening of the gorge some distance from the city itself.

Of course, she couldn’t see her sister’s dark form against the black cliffs at night, only tiny flickers of blue light that could only be born of Nimay’s yrae stone. On those nights Yamin couldn’t sleep, she could look out of her window that overlooked Ni-Yana and almost be guaranteed of seeing the twinkling blue lights.

She could never have a hope of guessing exactly what she did while she was out there, but something about the steady, gentle way she flapped her wings on the return journey hinted of a certain air of melancholy.

On this night, there were no blue lights to comfort Yamin and help her drift back to sleep. Nimay, along with the rest of the King’s Own, had been sent to Kazin to act as an escort for King Mithé. They would not return for at least a week yet.
Yamin knelt down by her windowsill, resting her chin on her hands as she stared out over the silent city. It was always more eerie in the silvery light of the stars. It was late enough that there was no moon to be seen, yet it was still warm enough that the healer felt quite comfortable in nothing but her light-weight nightgown. The warmth of the night promised intense heat the next day.

Absently, she held up her right, bangled hand, forming a ball of faintly glowing blue light. The gentle glow that omitted from it was steadier than a candle flame, even in deathly still air.

She wondered what Nimay might be doing right now. They would be well and truly back in Raykin by now, not far out of Ni-Aneka. Would Nimay be sleeping, or sending small glowing lights to shimmer over the Ra-Lin?

The healer smiled and settled back down in bed, comforted as always by the twinkling blue light.
