Notes~ kawa~ inspiration #21. Nimay meets Princess Lynnlita of Llayad, while she's in Raykin for Nol's hrai-dani.
~ ~ ~
“Nimay!”
The swordswoman in question stopped walking and turned to the female voice.
“Lynnlita has been intending on making Nimay’s acquaintance for some time now.” The Llayan princess, perched daintily on a sofa in the large room, beamed openly at her as she flitted a Llayan fan in front of her face. “She has spent four days in Raykin and not even seen the pearl of the prince’s eye once, is that not ridiculous? Come, sit with her.”
Nimay blinked at the Llayan’s speech. Even though she’d been to the golden kingdom once before, the strange use of the third person sounded strange, especially as Lynnlita was speaking in Raykinian and not her native tongue.
She cast a glance in the direction of the door she had been heading for, shrugged and changed course, unbuckling her sword hilt as she went. She’d originally been going to her room to dump her gear, change then head for the baths, as she usually did after training, but she saw no harm in talking to the princess for a few minutes.
She flopped down on a sofa by Lynnlita, hoping she was far enough away that the certain odours that accumulated during training wouldn’t offend the princess. She seemed like that kind of person.
“Is it not indecent for a woman to bear steel such as a man would?” Lynnlita began, casting a disparaging glance at the sword lying on the sofa.
Nimay blinked a few times to make sure she’d heard right. Certainly women rarely bore arms in the Raykinian army, but so long as they were good enough, nobody very much cared. ‘Watch me bear my steel and repeat that.’
“Lynnlita does not deny that Nimay is skilled at what she does,” the princess defended, obviously seeing Nimay’s accusation in her eyes, “but is it not… improper? Would she not prefer a less demanding pastime? Painting, perhaps, or needlework.”
The warrior thought back to her previous attempts at mending her shirt—her first and last try at needlework—and snorted, shaking her head sardonically.
Lynnlita looked at her sternly. “Women are meant to create life, not take it away. How many lives has Nimay taken?”
The swordswoman shrugged negligently.
“Too many to count,” the princess said dryly, “And she has created none to replace them.”
No, and the desert would turn green before she intended on doing so.
“It is not right,” Lynnlita muttered, almost to herself but for the fact she was still speaking Raykinian.
Nimay raised her eyebrows, querying if the Llayan princess had quite finished ‘making her acquaintance.’
Lynnlita waved her hand as she might do to a servant and returned to primly fan herself.
The warrior slapped her thighs, stood, grabbed her sword and walked out. She knew she should bow to the foreign princess, but in all honesty, she didn’t think Lynnlita deserved even a respectful nod of her head. No wonder Nol refused to propose to her.
