Notes~ kawa~ inspiration #23. The Own actually fighting someone. It happens more often than I write it, believe me ^^; As if they could just wander through Kazin without being noticed, let alone attacked X3;

Nimay drew her cloak around her shoulders, trying hard to think of the burning sun of Raykin to warm her up. At least they were heading in that direction now, with the snowy mountains behind them, but it would still be several weeks before the waterlogged Kazinian forests gave way to rolling, golden hills and, finally, flat red desert.

“Look at it this way,” Melraan told her, “At least we missed the Winter Solstice this year.”

Nimay shuddered at the mention of the word Winter, then cast a withering glance in the swordsman’s direction.

“Because of course,” Nolryn countered, “We’ve most definitely avoided Winter by coming to Kazin.”

Nimay lifted her head, frowning curiously at the road ahead. She held a hand up to silence her companions, then glanced over at the General.

Rau pulled up his reigns, and the rest of the Own followed suit. It was clear now. From ahead of them came the thumping of hoofbeats.

Almost simultaneously, a manner of weapons was drawn among the horse riders of Raykin. Those with ranged weapons silently moved to the head of the group, while the swordsmen stood behind.

The second that the Kazinians swept around from behind the trees, arrows, knives and spears began whistling through the air towards them. Several Kazinians had fallen from their horses before the rest of the group had even realised what had happened.

“It seems there are quite a number of them,” Melraan murmured as the ranged fighters let another volley at the Kazinians, only now unslinging their bows.

Nimay nodded, watching as the Kazinians continued to flow around the corner. There seemed to be at least fifty of them—more than three times as many Raykinians—but with the archers, blade archers and spearmen still firing, it seemed that there would probably be half that many by the time they actually reached the Own.

As they neared, Nimay recognised the dappled green shirts of the Kazinian army, armoured with rusted chain mail.

One Kazinian levelled his arrow at Nimay, firing just as a dagger implanted itself in his neck. Nimay flashed her sword up to deflect the flying arrow. A second loud clang to her left told her that Melraan had been fired at as well.

Finally, with half their ranks lying in the mud, the Kazinians managed to organise themselves enough to rush the Own, firing arrows as they charged forwards then drawing swords.

The ranged fighters drew back to level with the swordsmen, then drew their own swords, except the spearmen, who preferred to fight with their metal-tipped pikes.

Rau held up his sword in front of his face, urging his horse forwards a few paces. “Ready boys?”

Nimay nodded, though the General couldn’t see her, then brought her own sword up to meet the onslaught of Kazinian warriors.
