Nimay lit silently on the flat roof-balcony of the blacksmith, then carefully unsheathed her sword. She flattened her back against the wall, listening to the loud, pig-like snoring that told her she had the right blacksmith.

She smiled briefly, amused by the fact that his wife’s snoring should be what gave him away, then slipped the canvas door aside and stepped into the room.

Almost immediately, a hand grabbed her and spun her around. A cool steel blade pressed against her throat. She sighed irritably and swore silently at herself, knowing she should have anticipated this, entering the quarters of another assassin, especially this one.

“Who are you?” the man known by night as Eagle whispered harshly in her ear, “And why have you come into my home? If your plan is to steal one of my swords without leaving any coin for it, you are sorely mistaken.”

Nimay shook her head, grinning in silent laughter, then held up her right wrist, displaying the yrae stone clearly to her attacker. As she did, she held her palm out to the sleeping assassin’s wife, making sure she wouldn’t wake until the sun rose.

Eagle gasped at the sight of the stone, a sound Nimay wouldn’t have heard had his mouth not been so close to her ear, then the blade pressed harder against her throat.

“That was a mistake, Miss Nimay,” the assassin whispered, his voice over-filled with confidence. “If you’d pretended to only be a thief, I may have permitted you to leave unharmed. However, now you won’t be leaving at all. Your being here confirms that you know I could easily take your life.”

Nimay shrugged, rolling her eyes. Did he always talk in such length to his victims? She suspected it was supposed to make her feel worried. She’d never held such tactics in high regards, preferring the warrior’s method of just getting it over with as quickly as possible. She hoped that Eagle could feel her even pulse through the dagger he held to her throat.

“How did you find me?” he demanded, obviously still feeling as though he was in full control of the situation. “Why would the king only send one, and not have the whole of the Own capture me and take me to the palace?”

Nimay snorted, shaking her head ironically. Before Eagle could realise what she was doing, Nimay had flung both his daggers from his hands and had her own blade levelled under his chin. She glared down the length of steel, then raised her eyebrows. ‘Does that answer your question?’

Eagle’s face was still confident, and he folded his arms casually over his chest. “Riders of the Own don’t kill in cold blood,” he stated, placing full belief in his words.

‘True,’ Nimay conceded with a glance at the ceiling and shrug of one shoulder, then shot a malicious grin back down the length of her sword. ‘But I’m not here as part of the Own.’
