Fifteen horses shifted impatiently, flicking their ears in the constant mizzle that perpetually plagued the southern reaches of Kazin. Each rider had his eyes fixed on one thing: a post, stuck between the fork in the road. There were two flat pieces of wood nailed to it, each painted with the jagged script of the northern kingdom. One piece of wood pointed to the left road, labelling it ‘Silrona’, the other let the riders know the right road would lead them to ‘Essazed’.

The fifteen riders had been staring at the signpost for several minutes, each silently asking the same questions.

It was Nolryn who finally broke the silence with the most obvious question. “So… How long exactly has Kazin had signposts?”

Fourteen pairs of shoulders shrugged. “Two or three moons at most, I’d guess,” Melraan murmured, staring with his head tilted at the unexpected display of Kazinian ingenuity.

The prince tightened his reins on the restless Mongrel. “They couldn’t have signposted the entire kingdom already, could they?”

Another collective shrug. “If they have,” Melraan mused, “they’re going to need to redo it. Unless I’m imagining things, we’ve always taken the right road to Silrona.”

Collective nod.

Nolryn leaned forward in his saddle, resting his forearms on its pommel. “So General, which route do we take?”

The General stared at the sign for a few moments longer, his brow furrowed. “Who comes along this road?” he asked the prince.

Nol shrugged. “Traders, I guess. I don’t tend to pay that much attention to the Kazinian road system.”

“How many traders, would you say, can read?”
“Beyond checking their figures, I’d doubt it if any of them could read.”

“How many can read Kazinian?”

Another shrug. “Even fewer. Where is this leading, exactly?”

The corners of the general’s mouth curled slightly. “Who else travels this road?”

“Other Kazinians? I don’t know.”

“How about us, Highness? The Own travels this route fairly frequently, wouldn’t you agree?”

Nolryn frowned up at the foreign letters again. “They couldn’t seriously be trying to trick us into taking the wrong route, could they?”

The general nudged his heels against his horse’s flanks and led it towards the right fork. “Kazinian ingenuity,” he said simply.
