Nol flopped happily onto the couch, letting a contented sigh escape his lips as he closed his eyes and shuffled into a more comfortable position.

“Prince Nolryn has had a successful training session?” The foreign princess tried to sound cheery, but Nol knew that his kingdom’s heat had been getting to her, and the weariness showed through.

He shrugged from his position on the couch. “You could say that,” he told her, an enigmatic grin on his lips. “I lost every engagement, but got a Liquid Sunset out of it, so I’m happy.”

The sound of Lynnlita’s flapping fan stopped for a moment while she digested this, then she shrugged and laid her fan beside her, standing up and walking behind the couch where she began rustling with some bags.

Nol frowned but didn’t bother opening his eyes. “What are you looking for back there?”

“Mother packed a—EEE!”

The prince’s eyes clenched shut against the piercing squeal of his guest, reluctantly dragging his tired body into a standing position, only to have Lynnlita cling to him so desperately he felt as though she would drag him back onto the couch.

The princess was whimpering and pointing shakily behind her couch, her face buried in Nolryn’s shirt.

He sighed heavily and carefully picked the distraught girl from his person. “Lynnlita,” he said with strained patience, “What’s wrong?”

Lynnlita opened her mouth to try and answer, but nothing came out but desperate gasps, and she waved her hand back at the bags again by way of explanation.

Nol patted her shoulder reassuringly, then made his way behind the couch, peering at the bags for any sign of danger. It took a few moments for him to spot it, but when the glistening, coppery snake raised its black head and hissed in warning, everything else disappeared from view.

He took an involuntary step back, holding his hands defensively out to the snake.

“’MAY!”

As luck would have it, the swordswoman had just walked into the room. She raised her eyebrows in mocking question. There was only one reason the prince would yell for her in such a way.

Nol narrowed his eyes at her. “Shut up and get rid of the snake,” he said flatly, pointing at the rearing serpent.

Nimay grinned all too sweetly and casually gripped the snake behind its head. The animal’s coppery body twisted around her arm as it hissed angrily at her.

Lynnlita squealed again, threatening to cut off circulation to Nol’s fingers. “Is… is it dangerous?”

Nolryn shook his head. “No more than any others,” he answered, then began to ply the princess’ vice grip from his arm. “I just don’t like snakes.”
