The eleven-year-old prince slunk quietly into the room. He didn’t know why stealth mattered, but somehow it seemed of utmost importance that he wasn’t heard. Too bad the door creaked the moment he touched it.
He cringed against the noise, hoping that maybe his victim hadn’t heard. There was no sound of any other presence in the room, but that meant nothing.
He stood with hands on hips, surveying the room with both eyes and ears. There was a heavy oak bed, but that seemed too obvious. He checked underneath it just to make sure, but he was hardly surprised to find it empty but for a pair of sandals.
The clothes chest, too, was far too easy. He doubted his target would even be able to fit in it, whether the chest was filled with clothes or not. He lifted the lid anyway, but even though the chest seemed to only be half-full, there was no way anyone could fit in there with the clothes.
The prince folded his arms, tapping one foot and frowning at the oak wardrobe. That seemed as obvious a hiding place as under the bed.
Still, he shrugged and swung the doors open to be greeted by a large pile of clothes and a few hanging dresses. Nolryn couldn’t help raising an eyebrow at the dresses. Somehow, he couldn’t imagine Nimay wearing any of them. But then, he had his own ceremonial robes and royal garb hanging in his wardrobe, but he only ever wore that on extra-special occasions.
He shrugged again and glanced down at the pile of clothes, wondering why they were left lying at the bottom of the closet instead of the servants having taken them to the launders, or folded up neatly in the clothes chest.
A sly grin suddenly crept onto his lips as he spied something of interest at the bottom of the pile.
“Last I knew,” he said casually, “clothes didn’t have toes.”
The toe immediately disappeared under the pile, but Nol knew he’d already won. He laughed and began heaving the clothes from the pile, tossing them carelessly behind him.
“Found you!” he cried, flinging a towel back from Nimay’s tussled hair.
The younger girl poked her tongue out, then giggled herself, and began throwing clothes back at the young prince.
