“Majesty?”
“Mm?”
“I’m bored. Does this landscape ever change?”
Mithé sighed heavily. He’d expect such a comment from his eight-year-old son perhaps, but not so much from one of the riders of the Own. Nolryn was, in fact, unusually quiet. He was probably asleep.
“No, Nihqel, it doesn’t. Not until we reach Ryas.”
“Why in Lin’s sweet name does anyone live here?” the blade archer demanded, not for the first time. He cast his gaze around the white landscape. “I mean, it makes Ni-Yana look about as forested as Kazin.”
“Perhaps you’d like to pose your question to the Tsaythis when we get to Ryas,” Mithé said blandly.
Nihqel fell silent. Five minutes later, just as Mithé was thinking to himself that such a time span must be a record, the blade archer piped up again.
“Are we there yet?”
The question spawned groans from the contingent, but no verbal answers. Even a few of the horses flicked an ear or snorted.
“Nihqel?” Apparently the young prince wasn’t asleep.
“Highness?”
“Go sweep the desert.”
