~ ~ ~
Yamin stood anxiously at her window, eyes shifting between the horizon, the sky, the sleeping city and back to the sky again. If it wasn’t now, then it wouldn’t be for years to come yet. Hadn’t she been waiting for this opportunity for five years already?
Gingerly she set one foot on the cold stone of her windowsill, then lifted the other. Pristine white-feathered wings unfurled at her back as she gripped the wall with equally white knuckles.
She’d seen Nimay do this before, wheeling around the palace and giggling with the freedom it gave her. Every time, the training young healer had ached to take to the skies with her, but fear of being seen had prevented it. Even in the middle of the night, or during the day when her sister was no doubt in lessons, there was still the chance that she may look up at the sky and see a strange, massive white bird.
Tonight though, she knew Nimay wouldn’t be able to see her. Fifth year army trainees spent this week surviving in the desert, two days’ travel beyond the cliffs overlooking Ni-Yana. They wouldn’t return for another five days yet.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, counted silently to three and dropped out of the window, spreading her wings as wide as they would go and flapping madly, hoping against everything that she wouldn’t plummet like a stone to the earth.
When it became clear that she’d been in the air much longer than she should have been had she fallen to ground, she opened her eyes nervously, not knowing what to expect.
Her jaw dropped in a very audible gasp, and her wings stopped flapping for the shock of the sight below her. The wild flapping had taken her high, high above Ni-Yana, reducing the starlit metropolis to a pile of small bricks scattered randomly next to the tiny trickle of the Ra-Lin.
The bricks were, however, growing rapidly, reminding her belatedly to keep her wings spread. Now, with more of an idea as to what she was doing, she could feel the muscles and sinews in her wings stretch and relax as she flapped them, her confidence and control increasing with every wing-beat. It didn’t take long before she was able to glide, not having to flap her wings at all, and she even risked a loop-the-loop as she’d seen Nimay do on occasion.
While she lost a lot of altitude in the action, the thrill of seeing the horizon upside-down from so high up sent shivers up her spine and sent her into fits of giggles.
She spread her arms wide and dove down towards the ground with her wings folded against her back, then thrust them out again, straining them against gravity and her own momentum to push herself back skywards again. The chilling wind tickled her feathers as she soared higher, grinning the whole time.
Finally, when the ache in her wings outweighed the thrill she gained from extending them, she spilt the air from her feathers and spiralled back down to earth, landing somewhat inelegantly in the palace courtyard. She hadn’t gauged her rate of decent quite right, and stumbled forward when her feet hit the cobbles, just barely managing to catch herself without falling flat on her face.
It felt strange being on solid earth after so long being weightless in the air, and she glanced wistfully back up at the sky as she turned to the stairway that led to her room—she certainly didn’t have the control and finesse that Nimay had, and would have no hope of launching herself through her bedroom window.
Once in bed, Yamin spent long moments staring out the window, awaiting tomorrow night eagerly to take to the skies once more.
