Masalina peered diligently at Lynnlita’s palm, tracing the lines carefully and looking more like a masseuse than a fortune teller. She’d already peered into the princess’s eyes, gotten her to drop a selection of seven of her birthstones and asked a series of seemingly irrelevant questions regarding Lynnlita’s birth—was it cloudy or clear that night? Did it rain at all? (How many wildebeest were wandering around outside? Nol had added.)

All the while the fortune teller was making thoughtful noises, clucking her tongue and going “hmm” a lot.

“You will live a long and prosperous life,” Masalina concluded, smiling with great self importance as she let Lynnlita have her hand back. “A tall, dark and handsome man will win your heart, and you will live happy lives together to the end of your days.”

Nol raised one eyebrow as Masalina cast him a fleeting glance, but he chose not to interrupt. The princess smiled and bowed her head in thanks, then stood to leave.

“You’re joking,” the prince said flatly.

Lynnlita blinked. “Pardon?” she asked, quite oblivious.

“That seriously cost a gold piece? My gold piece?”

“Yes,” the princess answered, settling her shawl more comfortably on her shoulders. “Is there a problem?”

Nol blinked slowly, then gestured towards the fortune teller. “You do realise she’s conning you completely, right?”

Lynnlita shook her head, obviously not at all comprehending what Nol was telling her. “Oh no, most certainly not. Fortune tellers are highly regarded. They would never lie; it’s simply against their nature.” He noted a faint hint of languor in her words. Evidently her mind was on the last of the fortune teller’s words.

“It’s not going to happen,” he told her firmly, “Now, let’s go back to the castle and I can get my gold piece and buy something considerably more useful with it.”

“What could be more useful than knowing Lynnlita’s future?”

Nolryn let out a dry laugh. “That wasn’t your future, Lynnlita. That was a woman in silks poking your hand and stealing my coin.”

Lynnlita sighed, showing just as much frustration at Nol’s apparent ignorance as he showed at hers. “Nolryn should not judge things he does not understand.”

The prince held up his hands in exasperation. There was no point in arguing with her; once her mind was set on something, nothing would change it. “Okay, fine, go live happily and prosperously with your tall, dark and handsome man. As long as I get my gold piece back, I’m happy.”

Lynnlita nodded, happy she’d won the argument, then picked up her skirts and led the way back to Nenyad’s castle.
