“I’ve never really been a fan of eggs.” Melraan poked at the runny yellow yolk of his breakfast.
Nol sat himself down beside the swordsman. “Well that’s just your tough luck, because it’s about all I can cook. Kurae’s doing lunch, anyway. Nobody’s forcing you to eat them.”
Melraan shrugged and stabbed his stick of toast into the egg yolk. “I’ll live. Look at it this way: At least you’re right before Kurae and not after him. No matter what I do it’s going to pale in comparison.”
Nol nodded slowly, munching on his egg-soaked toast. “Porridge again then?”
The swordsman shrugged. “Better than boiled eggs. Or any other kind of eggs, for that matter.”
“Well I can’t do any other kind of eggs, so you’re safe there.”
Melraan frowned thoughtfully. “I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I mean, it’d at least be some variety.”
“Quiet or I’ll make chicken soup again.”
Melraan’s eyes widened and he almost choked on his eggs. “Please, for the love of the goddesses, don’t! That stuff made me sick for three days!”
The prince grinned. “You’re happy with eggs then?”
“No, but they’re better than chicken soup.”
“Hey, I do better than any other royal.”
“What about the Llayans?”
Nol snorted and shook his head. “Oh yeah, I can definitely see Lynnlita and Amyrallyn in the kitchen. I think they know how to make tea and that’s about it.”
“Tsaythis? I can’t see their royals with servants.”
“There’s more to boiling an egg than there is to slapping a bit of raw fish on a plate.”
Melraan frowned, then shook his head helplessly. “That’s appalling.”
The prince shrugged. “If the palace staff all simultaneously strike on us, we’ll live on raw fish, boiled eggs and tea.”
“Sounds thrilling.”
“I thought so.”
“…I’m still not a fan of eggs.”
