“Now be careful with that, Yamin, it’s very sharp.”
Yamin nodded and took the knife her mother had handed her. Riona held one the same, and now she set a cucumber on the chopping board between them, chopping it deftly in half and rolling one end to Yamin.
“Hold the cucumber like this in your left hand,” Riona explained. Yamin imitated, though her small fingers didn’t grip it quite as easily as her mother’s. “Then hold the knife like this in your right, making sure to keep your fingers away from the blade, and cut the cucumber like that.”
The knife slid easily through the cucumber, clacking onto the wooden board beneath it.
Yamin positioned her own knife correctly in her hand and began slicing the cucumber, with considerably more care than her mother.
“That’s right, just make the slices a bit skinnier, otherwise they won’t cool as well and they’ll be too crunchy.”
Yamin nodded and picked up one of the offending slices, popping it in her mouth with a grin. She loved cucumber.
Riona laughed and ruffled her daughter’s hair. “No more until dinner, okay?” she said, shaking her knife in mock threat. Then she picked up a piece of cucumber for herself.
The young girl giggled and returned to her slicing, sneaking the odd slice into her mouth when Riona wasn’t watching.
Yamin smiled, turning her head to gaze out over the city towards where her old house lay. Doubtless other people who’d lost their mother would look back on such situations and cry, and five or six years ago, Yamin had done the same. She still desperately wanted her mother back, but she had to admit she enjoyed her life now. She was able to remember it as her childhood now, rather than the childhood she’d lost.
She sighed and closed her eyes, rolling over in bed and drifting back to sleep.
