Edit~ 21 March 07~ Yoryl wasn't in the Own yet. Ignore him >>

Yoryl picked up one of the hats from the stand and slapped it on his head, posing with one hand on the enormously wide brim.

“These would be quite useful on missions, you know,” he said in all seriousness.

Nimay grabbed one of the huge woven Llayan hats from the stand and set it on her head, tilting her neck back so she could see out from under the floppy brim.

Melraan folded his arms. “You can only look so threatening with a sunflower attached to your hat,” he surmised, flicking Nimay’s bright yellow bloom.

Nolryn looked dubious. “I think even without the flower I’d prefer something with a more masculine appearance. The woven plait things don’t work for me.”

Yoryl poked his tongue out, then flicked out four daggers and displayed them in front of his face. A threatening smirk spread over his lips.

The other three riders of the Own, Nimay included, couldn’t help bursting out into fits of laughter.

“The new face of the King’s Own!” Melraan spluttered, “Sunflowers and woven plait things!”

“Kazin will be reeling!” Nol agreed.

“If you’re quite finished.” The blade archer tried to sound hurt, but it was plainly obvious he was giggling with the rest of them. He took the hat off and examined it more critically. “The basic idea’s there, all we have to do is take the Llayan-ness out of it.” He tossed the hat onto Melraan’s head.

The swordsman tipped his own neck back and set the hat more comfortably with his hands. “It could work. Make the main head bit of it from nira hide and we’ve got a helmet, too.” The brim chose that moment to flop down in front of his eyes again. “On second thoughts, make the whole thing out of nira hide.”

Nol shook his head. “I still say it looks odd.”

Melraan snorted and blew vigorously at his brim to try and lift it back up again. “You have no vision, Nol.”

“Neither do you,” the prince told him, tugging the brim down further.

Nimay grinned and removed her had, agreeing that it had potential, it was just too… Llayan in its current form. Imagining all fifteen riders of the Own, proudly astride their horses with assorted shiny weapons drawn and sunflower hats did nothing but make her giggle.

“We’re the trendsetters, anyway,” Yoryl added, “If we can convince the whole Own they’re a good idea, then Ni-Yana will be wearing them in a week, you just watch.”

The scary thing was that he was probably right.
