Yamin always loved being in the palace garden. It was always so green and so much cooler than anywhere else in the palace grounds. An assortment of leafy green plants and palms surrounded the small pond, an oasis in the desert of the palace courtyard. She often sat on the rocks around the edge of the pool and watched the bright silver and gold flashes of the fish under the surface, darting among the reeds and rocks that were scattered around their home.

Sometimes, she dangled her feet in the water, closed her eyes and pretended she was far off in Kazin, where the breeze hushed through thousands of treetops instead of the meagre handful dotted around the palace rock pool.

Her favourite plants in the garden had always been the water lilies. They were so vastly different to just about every other plant in the kingdom. Most Raykinian plants were dry and brittle, generally sharp and pointy either in the form of thorns or a mass of sticks and stiff grass… They all looked, to Yamin, like they were out to attack anyone who laid a finger on them.

The water lily though, that was a much gentler plant. Their broad, soft leaves and delicate white flowers seemed to float upon the surface of the water, rippling with the small waves that rolled over the pond’s surface when Yamin splashed her feet in the water. While every other Raykinian plant was all about survival, water lilies tried to look pretty while they did it.

The young healer smiled and looked off towards the healing house. She’d read that, in Llayad, every healing house had a water lily, either in a small pond at the back, in the wetter parts of the kingdom, or in a large tub of water in the desert regions. For the Llayans, it was thought to have medicinal properties in bringing a person out of depression.

While Raykinians weren’t half as superstitious as the Llayans tended to be, Yamin had to admit that the delicate water plant always brought a smile to her face, and felt that the healing house’s small water garden could do with its own water lily.

She knelt by the water’s edge and delved under the surface, carefully uprooting one of the smaller plants, then pulled it up, shook off the excess water and set it in the bowl she had brought from the healing house. She couldn’t help but feel just slightly guilty in removing the plant from its home, but it wasn’t as though she was stealing it, just moving it to another location. The healers would appreciate it and the gardeners probably wouldn’t notice.

She walked calmly back to the healing house and around to the small pond around the back. It was much smaller than the palace garden, with only the one palm to provide shade. The plants in it all had some medicinal purpose, whether it was the cool-smelling mint brought from northern Llayad that did wonders for people with stuffy noses, or the succulent aloe vera that was mixed with bees’ wax to make an effective burn salve.

The water lily didn’t technically fill any of these purposes, but if it made just one more person smile, then Yamin felt that its presence was more than justified.
