“Do you think you made the right decision?”

“Yes.”

Mithé sighed heavily and rubbed the bridge of his nose with thumb and forefinger. “I worry, Nolryn.” He looked up, fixing his eyes with the somewhat uncomfortable look in his son’s. The most disturbing thing about that look was that behind it, Mithé could very clearly see the underlying nonchalant thought: ‘Here we go again…’

The king folded his hands in his lap, looking at the bronzed skin, scorched and brittle after fifty years of exposure to Aeia’s light. He idly worked at the webbing between thumb and forefinger with the other thumb.

“I worry,” he said again, hoping, but not expecting, that his words would sink in this time. “Because when you take the reins of this kingdom, I won’t be here to guide you. You think you’re making the right decisions, Nolryn, but really, you still have no idea.” He frowned, trying to think of words that might hit home. “You surprise me sometimes, with decisions I would not have thought of myself, but would in fact work better, but I don’t believe you are making them for the right reasons.”

Nolryn opened his mouth, but said nothing. Mithé could tell from the tightening in his jaw that it was only going to be a retort, an attempt to defend himself. The fact that it hadn’t come reassured the king to a certain extent. Maybe he was finally realising there was more to reigning than taking control of more kingdoms.

Mithé sighed again. “Try and think what would be best for Raykin’s people, not so much Raykin’s treasury. Yes, cheaper wood and lamb would be good for both, but war is hardly the way to go about it. It would do far more harm to Raykin’s people than good.”

“We have the strongest army we have had in centuries,” Nolryn retorted, “you have even said this yourself.”

“Kazin is still stronger, whether your pride and patriotism wishes to believe it or not.”

Nolryn was silent for several moments, his dark eyes fixed with determination on Mithé’s own.

“I can rule this kingdom, Father.”

Mithé shook his head slowly. “At this point, I’m not sure you can.”
