“No, you most certainly may not.” Aeia stood protectively in front of her beautifully tri-coloured desert framed by grey mountains in the north, and Lin’s quickly encroaching splash of water to the west and south. “You’ve already screwed up your bit. Nobody can do anything with water that’s filled with salt.”

Lin tossed her dripping hair back over her shoulder and rested her hands on her hips. “Because of course people can live perfectly fine with no water at all,” she countered. She craned her neck around Aeia’s sandy red form to look at the dunes forming behind her. “You’ve got nothing but sand,” she accused, “Are you sure you don’t want just a little bit of water? Just enough to put something more there aside from sand?”

Aeia lowered her head in a scowl, but Lin could tell she was beginning to realise there was only so much entertainment she could glean from sand dunes. Finally she stepped aside, and stormed off, giving Lin free-reign of the desert world.

“Don’t muck it up like you did your own bit,” Aeia threatened over her shoulder.

The lesser goddess grinned and rubbed her blue hands in glee before diving on the desert landscape. The mountains were the most fun. Her thin blue fingers scribbled on the jagged grey forms, winding thin silvery streams down the valleys, collecting picturesquely in mirror-like lakes that reflected the mountains to give another view of them entirely. The creeks widened into rivers that tumbled over huge cliff faces and raged in rapids through the wild mountain country before collecting back into Lin’s own, salt-spoiled ocean.

The water goddess smiled triumphantly at her work. “Much better,” she told herself, then turned her attention to the bland, featureless deserts. “She mustn’t be finished with this bit yet,” she mused, then shrugged and began trailing her finger through the barren landscape. A long, spiralling river here, twisting in what she liked to imagine was an artistic hook in the middle. Another river over here, splitting in two fingers that came down to meet the ocean. Maybe just one more down the middle for good measure…

“What have you done?”

Lin squeaked, accidentally squirting a lake right in the middle of Aeia’s desert.

“You’ve ruined it!” Aeia complained, shoving the lesser goddess off of her map and trying unsuccessfully to fill in the huge lake Lin had just added.

“I didn’t mean to…”

“What do you mean, ‘didn’t mean to’? Look what you did to my mountains! What is this, hmm?” She pointed at the artistic dusting of snow Lin had sprinkled over the southernmost mountain range.

“I thought it looked nice,” Lin mumbled. “I think it’s good enough, anyway. Look,” she pointed at the lakes and rivers scribbled all over the mountains, “We’ll be able to put people there, lots of trees and animals and things. It’ll be lovely!”

Aeia folded her arms and stood back to survey the damage. “I’m not so sure I like the idea of people,” she muttered to herself, then sighed. “Still, they can’t ruin it much more than you already have.”
