Yamin was whistling quietly to herself as she set the last of the washed bowls aside. The girls who would soon be arriving for the night shift would have done it themselves, but there wasn’t anything else for her to do while waiting but idly occupy herself with tidying. Somehow, she felt she had accomplished more in the day if she was able to leave the healing house clean.

The two healers taking over for the night walked into the healing house right on time to relieve Yamin and the other two healers with her. Auin, the head healer, would be staying at least until the midnight rush had dissipated.

“Night, ‘min,” the two healers called as she left. She waved back over her shoulder at them, spread her wings and flapped them strongly to launch herself into the air and spiral leisurely up to the top of her tower.

Before diving into her window though, she paused, perched on the sill and gripping onto the frame with both hands as she frowned into the room. She was sure she’d just seen movement in there… There, again. There were most definitely three dark shapes crouched beside her bed, and another by her wardrobe.

Her frown deepened further, then broke into a grin. She knew exactly what was going on here. She whistled sharply, causing the three dark shapes to squeal and fall over themselves in the dark.

“Yamin!” came Nanuka’s shocked but nevertheless relieved voice, “We’re supposed to be the one’s surprising you!”

Yamin giggled and slipped properly into her room, setting the candles alight with blue flame from her fingertips so she could better see her “intruders”. The action drew four impressed “ooh”s from the healers.

“Happy birthday, anyway,” Nanuka said warmly, wrapping her friend in a strong hug, then took her hands and dragged her towards the spiral staircase leading back down out of the tower. “Now come on, we’re having a night on the town, whether you like it or not. Don’t look so horrified! You know Nimay’ll be at the ‘Thrai all night, and besides,” she added, a twinkle in her eye and her smile slightly crooked, “We’ve got somewhere better.”

“Come on, ‘min,” Fali encouraged, “It’s your seventeenth birthday and you still haven’t gotten drunk once in your life! I want to see what you’re like drunk.”

The other healers laughed aloud, Yamin included. She nodded in resignation, then shook her green healer’s robe, insisting that she change into something more comfortable before they went anywhere.

“Okay fine,” Menala said, sitting her hands on her lips, “you change, we’ll wait downstairs. But there is no way we’re coming back up here to get you!” She shook her finger threateningly, then ushered the other healers to the staircase to let Yamin change in privacy.

“Race you down!” Nanuka called to Yamin from the stairwell.

Yamin laughed and quickly began searching for suitable clothes. The race was on!
