Nimay dangled another blade of spinifex in the fire until the end had caught alight, then held it to her face, watching as the flame crept down the stick. Brittle, grey ash curled and dropped off behind it. She blew the flame out before it reached her fingers, sending the remaining ash that still clung to the unburnt spinifex flying into the wind.
The travelling was undoubtedly the most boring part of being in the Own. There were never any campaigns close to Ni-Yana. Most often, the fifteen horse riders were sent to Kazin; only very occasionally did they have assignments within Raykin’s own borders, and even then it was generally so close to the border it may as well be Kazin. The settlements there certainly wanted to be part of that kingdom.
The swordswoman flicked the end of spinifex into the fire and lay back in the cool sand with her hands behind her head. Golden sparks from the fire flew up to mingle with the steadily twinkling silver stars. It was a moonless night, making the stars and sparks seem brighter. Nimay extended one arm, fingers splayed towards the sky, and sent some of her own turquoise sparks up to join the gold and silver.
One blue spark collided with a golden one, making a small ‘pop’ and exploding in a tiny flicker of white light.
“Think you can hit another one?”
Nimay critically eyed the erratic paths of the fire’s flying embers, aimed carefully with her index finger and shot one blue spark through the smoke. It missed everything and died out in the night air.
She could hear the sand shift as Nolryn shrugged beside her. “I don’t suppose you were ever a particularly good shot.”
Nimay rolled her head to face the prince, dark eyebrows arched over half-lidded eyes. ‘I’d like to see you do better.’
A confident grin spread over Nolryn’s features. “Give me an yrae stone and I’m certain I could shoot down every one.”
Nimay just snorted.
