Yamin smiled and sat back to admire her work, absently brushing away a fly from the finished parchment. There was another desert story to add to the archives. Once she had all the ones written down that she could remember from her childhood, she’d maybe be able to start educating children. She couldn’t see it happening in her lifetime, but she could at least begin to put an end to the rift between desert people and river folk, and she knew that would start with the children. If she could get them to see there was something wrong…
A sudden, stiff breeze came through the southern window of her room, flipping the pages and scattering them over Yamin’s floor. She snatched out at them, her heart skipping a beat. She would have lost the top page out the window if she didn’t have the yrae stone to grab it for her.
Her eyes widened in surprise as she looked out the window and pulled the page back towards her and slipped them all firmly in a drawer. Last time she’d looked outside, it was the same bright blue sky in every direction. Suddenly now, it was quite dark, not because the sun had gone down—she hadn’t been writing for quite that long—but heavy, blue-grey rain clouds were forming overhead.
Her lips pursed in a silent “ooh” as another gust of wind came through the southern window, this time drawing goosebumps on her skin ad making the hairs on her head stand on end. Not only that, but a few drops of rain flew through the open window, making dark marks on the red stone floor of her room.
She ran quickly to the window and pulled the wooden shutter down, then did the same with all but the window that looked out north. This one she dove out of, catching herself on the strengthening wind and giving her wings a few flaps to get her on the flat roof of her tower. She sat down on the roof, her legs dangling over the southern edge and face into the cold south wind. Her wings were still outstretched, the crisp white feathers being tugged in the wind.
There was no danger of Nimay seeing her up here—she and the rest of the King’s Own had left on a mission nearly three weeks ago.
With the suddenness of the desert weather, the clouds opened and Lin dumped torrents of rain down on the parched red sand.
Yamin turned her face upwards and closed her eyes, laughing into the rain. It seemed like the whole of the Ra-Lin had suddenly been released from above. She turned around, looking over the white arch of her wing and down to the city. Several other people were standing on their roof-tops doing much the same as Yamin.
For almost two full seasons, Ni-Yana had not received a drop of rain. Yamin hoped that this time, maybe, Lin had finally blessed them.
