Nimay had always thought the throne room was just that little bit ostentatious for Raykin, even if it was the most important room in the kingdom.

There was just too much gold everywhere, and were it not built from red stone, Nimay could have almost thought she was in Kazin. It wasn’t quite so bad as the Llayan throne room—it was impossible to see any stone at all in that place, it was so laden with decorations. For Raykin though, it was just that little bit over the top.

Portraits of past monarchs were hung on the walls, making Nimay feel like there were hundreds of pairs of eyes on her, even though she was alone in the room. She sighed, already bored of waiting, and began to inspect some of the paintings, wondering if she could see any resemblance between the old kings and Nol.

The first picture was little more than a charcoal sketch on a sheet of papyrus, but it nevertheless sent shivers up Nimay’s spine. He was a stern figure, with slitted eyes and a thin moustache. His queen stood behind him to his right, looking equally stern. Nimay never trusted men with thin moustaches. She didn’t need to read the plaque below the gilded gold frame to know who this was. King Yan, 17AY – 26MY.

Beside him was another charcoal sketch, and Nimay couldn’t help suspecting there had been a bit of artistic licence taken with this one. King Qewir looked a considerably happier, more lenient man than the tyrant he’d killed. Looking at both the portraits together, Nimay was reminded of children’s stories, where it was easy to tell who was the villain and who was the good guy just by glancing at them. She rolled her eyes, wondering what the two ancient kings had actually looked like, then decided she didn’t really care.

She wandered down the line of kings and queens, picking each one out as either good or bad rulers depending on how the artists at the time had painted them. The more modern paintings—from the last four or five hundred years—were more difficult to pick up on, and seemed to genuinely be a likeness to the ruler instead of a painting of a good or evil monarch.

Finally she came to one that made her eyes widen; the king was a dead ringer for Nol. He was standing behind the seated queen, meaning he wasn’t the true descendant of Qewir, but had married into the family, as Mithé had done. His hair had been tied back loosely at the nape of his neck, and his arms weren’t quite as defined as the Own-influenced biceps of the current crown prince, but aside from that, there was no difference. He even looked to be the same age. King Galeo, 3820 – 3841. She’d have to ask Nol about this one.

The door to King Mithé’s office creaked open, startling Nimay from her thoughts.

“Congratulations, General,” he said with a smile.
