Nimay set her foot in Ashburn’s stirrup and swung her other leg up over the mare’s glistening black rump. It seemed that even the horse knew something was happening today, out of the usual run Nimay took her for every day or two.
General Rau came over on his own proud chestnut horse, eyebrows raised in concern. “Ready ‘may?”
The swordswoman nodded, gripping Ashburn’s reins tightly, not allowing the mare too much slack. She was okay riding through the city normally, but the streets were never as packed as she was sure they were today. She couldn’t be certain how her steed would react. Certainly she had an easier task than the prince, anyway.
Rau had gone over to check on Nolryn. “You got control of that stallion?”
“Much as I ever have,” the prince muttered. Mongrel was standing surprisingly still, but there was the ever-present wild look in his eyes, the flattened ears and swishing tail. He began pawing at the floor of the stable with one hoof and snorted impatiently.
“Just don’t let him loose on the general public,” the General warned, then turned his own, considerably more obedient old stallion around to take the lead. Well, almost the lead. Charcoal, Kurae’s near-black stallion, seemed to insist on being first, and Rau wasn’t doing anything to stop him from doing so.
‘We have too many stallions,’ Nimay noted, watching as Nol wrangled with his increasingly impatient beast.
A loud banging, creaking sound echoed across the courtyard and into the stables; the gates were being opened.
“Okay boys, we’re up!” Rau kicked his steed into action, galloping out of the stable with the rest of the Own in tow.
Nimay didn’t have to do anything to set Ashburn running. She was off like a shot, plainly excited by the event of all fifteen horses going out for a ride at the same time. Nimay grinned, getting caught up in the excitement herself as the hooves clattered over the cobbles of the palace courtyard and towards the heavy iron gates.
Until now, Nimay had only ever seen the horses burst out into the main street from the other side, watching with wide, envious eyes as the beautiful animals and their riders trotted past. Now, she was in the thick of it. The smell of dust, horses and people was strong in her nostrils as she and Ashburn burst out into the open of Ni-Yana’s Main Road.
A cheer instantly rose up from the crowd by the gates, rippling back to those down the far end of the road. Nimay could feel every pair of eyes fixed on her, watching her with the same awe and appreciation as she’d watched the rest of the Own with for all her remembered life, probably more.
She’d thought she’d have been intimidated by appearing in front of so many people, but seeing all their smiling, encouraging faces… this was what being in the Own was about, and Lin’s blood did she love it.
