Alex blinked at the yellow-robed little Llayan, then leaned inconspicuously towards the prince standing just beyond the fence. “What’d he say?” he whispered out the corner of his mouth.

“Quick-fire,” Nolryn translated, “They’ll give you fifty arrows, and another fifty to the Llayan, and whoever empties their quiver fastest progresses to the next round.”

The purple-haired-turned-brown-haired incubus frowned thoughtfully at the bullseye mounted on the wall ahead of him. “Can I shoot more than one at a time?”

The prince shook his head.

Alex bared his teeth in a grin. “Thirty seconds,” he declared.

The Raykinian laughed. “I’m timing,” he said, bringing out the stopwatch Alex had leant him and tapping it with one finger. “You owe me a beer if you go over.”

The yellow-robed Llayan spoke again, and two girls emerged, each carrying a quiver of arrows that they handed to the two competitors.

Alex grinned in thanks and slapped the young girl on the behind, winking when she turned back to him in horror. Llayans, the incubus decided, needed to get out more.

He set the quiver over one shoulder and planted his feet comfortably on the soil, waiting for the cry from the yellow-robed man that would begin the competition.

Finally he raised both hands, almost as though he lifted the bows in the hands of the two archers, then cried out at the top of his voice, “Ali!”

Alex grinned and began flinging arrows at the target ahead of him. It wasn’t a points game: there was no way he could fit fifty arrows onto the tiny centre ring anyway. The arrows whistled through the air, blurring almost into a continuous stream. Certainly there were never less than two arrows in the air at any one time.

Naturally, the Llayan was still firing when the incubus lowered his bow, but that wasn’t what really mattered. He turned and raised inquisitive eyebrows at the Raykinian prince.

Nolryn was smirking as he tossed the stopwatch to his friend. Alex caught it and glanced down at the digital display.

Thirty point one three.

Go figure.
