Notes~ Genesis 039. This is how Lynnlita nor~mally acts around men trying to win her affections. Just a bit of a contrast to meeting War X3

“Oh princess fair, might her dearest Highness grant Kerratna with her presence?”

Amyrallyn raised an amused eyebrow as she looked up from her embroidery. “Lynnlita had better see what the gentleman wishes,” she told her younger sister.

Lynnlita sighed and laid her own needlework down on the chair. “If she must,” she said, laying the back of one hand dramatically over her forehead. “Oh, but the life of a princess is so stressful,” she declared, then swanned off to the low wall enclosing the roof of the castle and rested her arms on the edge to look down at the latest young man vying for her affections.

This particular young man had dark brown hair tied back in a loose tail, and he was dressed in a doublet of grey velvet, which instantly lost his chances before he’d had a chance to open his mouth. Nevertheless, Lynnlita waited on the roof for him to sing her praises. She was about ready for some amusement just now—needlework could only sustain her interest for so long.

He smiled up at her, offering out a red rose with one hand. “Kerratna had grown this very rose in his own garden, with the dear princess in mind. He tended it with the same loving care he would show the princess, but only now does he see that the rose hardly compares to the beauty for whom it was grown. The gods themselves could not compare.”

The number of times Lynnlita had heard the rose opening before was appalling, and she’d definitely heard it recited far better before. Did men have no imagination at all? She was tempted to put on the bashful look, just to keep him amused, but she was feeling slightly malicious today, and so remained perfectly still.

Kerratna already knew he was in trouble. He cleared his throat and brought the rose hesitantly to his chest, preparing for his next line. Lynnlita shifted impatiently. If they were going to learn their lines as though they were performing a play, they could at least try and sound less obvious about it.

“Kerratna would walk to the ends of the earth if he thought it should please the fair princess—”

“Then do so,” Lynnlita interrupted him, “Better men have failed in Kerratna’s position. Lynnlita is sure he will make some fine woman very happy some day, but that woman will most certainly not be Lynnlita.”

Kerratna’s only movement through Lynnlita’s rejection was the slow falling of his face and clenching of his hands around the rose’s stem. Lynnlita could see a trickle of blood running down his fingers. He’d brought her a rose with thorns? Now she was insulted. She thought every man knew never to offer a woman a thorny rose, especially when using it to compare her to.

She smiled with dangerous sweetness, then turned from the wall with a toss of her rich brown curls and a flourish of her golden skirts to continue with her needlework.
