The messenger opened the doors to the throne room, stepped out and closed them behind her, bowing briefly to the small assembly in the hall outside.

“The empress will see you now,” she told them, reopening one of the doors. Apparently foreign royalty wasn’t important enough in Kazin’s eyes that both doors be opened for them. Or Raykinian royalty, at least.

Rau turned to the prince, eyebrows raised in question. “Ready?”

Nol shrugged casually and got to his feet. “Course I am.”

He wasn’t. He’d only met the Kazinian empress once before, years ago on his royal meet-and-greet. He may have only been seven years old at the time, but he had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that Shizaaqa would not have lost any of her potency in that time. She had frightened him then, and he was in no doubt that she would frighten him again today. All he need do was to keep her from seeing it.

Since the meet-and-greet, he’d spoken officially with nearly every member of royalty in Tsyllaes, except the far northern regions of Kazin, which didn’t worry Raykin. In those situations, he’d never felt the slightest bit intimidated. If they’d tried, as Llayad’s King Keldirande often tried to do, he’d always been sure enough of himself to intimidate them right back. In the face of Shizaaqa though, he couldn’t help but feel she’d see through him.

He strode confidently into the throne room, half-wishing he’d thought to bring his crown with him. It was an uncomfortable, ugly thing, but at least it would make him look more official. As it stood, only the embroidered insignia on his left shoulder marked him as royalty.

By contrast, there could be no mistake made that the woman seated at the end of the throne room was Kazin’s empress. She reminded Nol of a cat he’d seen perched on the top of his home palace’s outer wall, its ears twitching at the slightest sound as it surveyed its domain, only the empress was far more overbearing than the feline.

She was draped in layers of brightly coloured, semi-transparent gauze, her breasts faintly visible beneath the thin material in typical northern Kazinian style. Gold jewellery clung to her and dripped from her skin like the ever-present humidity in this part of the kingdom, not least of all on the glistening crown atop her head, set with brilliant green and blue jewels. Her coppery waves of hair were tied up in a high ponytail, the tips just barely brushing her shoulders.

Everything about the woman, from the self-assured smile on her lips to the many servants fanning her with peacock’s tails, bespoke a power greater than Raykin could imagine, but there was one small advantage Nol knew he had over her, and it brought an equally confident smile to his own lips as he strode down the red carpet to the empress.

For all her appearance of grandeur, Shizaaqa held no power over her people.

Nolryn did.
