Ulkar crouched hesitantly beside the Ra-Lin, such a far cry from the wide, sluggish serpent it would become further downstream. Here, it was barely knee deep as it tinkled over the grey rocks of the Kazinian mountains, and Lin’s sweet and holy blood it was cold.

The swordsman sighed heavily, causing a cloud to escape from his nostrils.

“Best get this over with,” he muttered to himself, then plunged his empty water skin into the frigid water, gasping at the sheer cold that gripped his hand, threatening to drag him in.

He stared hard at the river, urging it to fill his skin quicker so he could take his hand out and thaw it out over the fire. Finally the bubbles stopped coming to the surface, and he quickly snatched the bottle from the river, shaking his hand to try and return some semblance of feeling to his reddened fingertips. He blew on them briefly, then shoved his hand under one arm. All that did was make a wave of goosebumps wash over him.

He caught a sudden movement out of the corner of his eye, and was instantly in his battle stance, sword out and ready to deflect any flying arrows.

He was able to relax though. It wasn’t a Kazinian archer that had moved in the trees, but the sleek, prowling form of a tiger. The lithe animal slunk like silk through the snow, its paws making no noise. Its head was perfectly still, hard golden gaze fixed on some animal that Ulkar couldn’t see.

The swordie crouched back down slowly, eyes wide with fascination. Spinifex tigers, tiger snakes, tiger spiders, his sister’s pet tabby called Tiger… None of them held a candle to the powerful grace of the animal they were named for.

The tiger paused momentarily, lowering itself so its belly brushed against the snow as it stalked ever closer to its prey. Ulkar held his breath and remained absolutely still, his frozen fingers forgotten in the face of such a magnificent predator.

The crunching of heavy footsteps in snow came from behind him, sounding incredibly clumsy in the still silence of the forest.

The tiger’s prey, some fluffy white creature Ulkar didn’t recognise, was off like a shot into the trees. The tiger itself, lifted its head and looked straight back, ears pricked, at the noise that had scared away its dinner. It flicked its tail in almost tangible irritation, then lurked back into the trees.

“Hey Ulkar!” Melraan called out, “Food’s up!”

The swordsman crunched closer, knocking his knuckles on Ulkar’s head. “You been frozen solid?” he asked, the grin plain in his voice.

Ulkar shook his head and got to his feet, his knees cracking as he did so. “I’ll be right,” he grinned, shoving his sword back into its scabbard. “Whose turn was it today?”

“Garuk’s, I think.”

“You scared off a tiger for Garuk’s cooking?” Ulkar accused, smacking his friend upside the head.

Melraan blinked. “I scared off a tiger? Nice.”
