At the first hint of any Kazinians, draw sword and yell “ambush” three times, then the rest of the Own would wake up and attack along side.
Easy enough, except that Nimay couldn’t yell “ambush” once, let alone three times. She’d been practicing whistling with her fingers, but when her fingers were numb with cold, it made the task considerably more difficult.
She yawned widely, then shook her head vigorously to keep herself alert. She could really go with a cup of Kurae’s hot chocolate now.
There! What was that? Somewhere off into the trees to her left. Was that a movement?
She didn’t change her posture as she sat on the stone with her cloak hunched around her, but her eyes darted off to the left to inspect the trees as her hand moved to grip her sword hilt. She yawned again, but this time she was well aware she was doing it.
The movement came again, just a shadowy form in the leaves, but it moved too stealthily to be an animal.
Nimay’s heart started beating faster, enough that she could hear the blood pumping against her eardrums. She lifted her fingers to her mouth, licked her suddenly dry lips, and blew hard.
The only sound that came from her mouth was a harsh breath that wasn’t going to wake anyone.
‘Don’t panic, ‘may,’ she told herself, taking a deep breath to try—unsuccessfully—to calm herself. She lifted her fingers to her lips again, attempting another whistle, but her fingers were just too numb to give her anything more than a harsh rush of air.
The shape was moving closer now, unmistakeably human, and Nimay could spot another one in the trees to her right. Were they being surrounded?
The swordswoman took a few more deep breaths, then gripped her sword hilt with both hands and swept to her feet, facing the first shadowy figure and hoping that the fear in her eyes was hidden by the darkness of the night.
Both figures froze for a few moments, perhaps deciding what they would do now they had been caught out.
‘Please only be two of you,’ Nimay murmured in her mind.
The first Kazinian charged, though he still remained annoyingly quiet in the undergrowth. Nimay had been hoping he’d at least crash through the bushes or maybe even give a nice loud battle cry, anything to wake up the rest of the Own.
The other Kazinian released an arrow, which Nimay didn’t see until it had thudded into her armoured stomach. She made certain to put the sword-bearing Kazinian between her and the archer, using him as a shield.
Neither of the bandits was army trained, and they were unaccompanied, but the situation still set Nimay’s teeth on edge. If there was an ambush of more than three or four Kazinians, she would have no hope.
She shook her head and approached the General’s tent. ‘Sorry, Rau.’ She grimaced and crouched down, preparing to wake the General.
