“Raykin is a desert kingdom,” Lynnlita argued, “It sees more sun than Llayad and Kazin combined! How can it be that Raykin does not have some way of curing sunburn?”
Mina shook her head apologetically. “The cure is to just stay out of the sun and not scratch it. It’ll sort itself out in a week or so.”
“A week?” Lynnlita looked down at her reddened arm in horror. “Lynnlita is already starting to peel! Is there not a moisturising cream she could use? A burn cream used when someone has been scolded by hot water?”
The healer made an uncertain face. “Well… yes… but it does more harm than good.”
“How?”
“It may soften your skin, but it traps the heat in so that in the end, you stay red longer, peel for longer, and look like a shrivelled prune by the time you’re thirty.”
The Llayan princess made a displeased noise and rubbed idly at her arms, her eyes scanning the walls for something that may help her skin.
“It’s best to get it over and done with quickly, and the best way to do that is to just let it run its course and not pick at it.”
Lynnlita sighed insolently and dropped her hands to her sides. “There must be something Mina can do.”
Mina shook her head, thankful that the foreign princess wasn’t keeping her from any particularly important duties. “Give it a week or so and you’ll have a healthy golden glow.” She gave Lynnlita an encouraging pat on the shoulder, not surprised at the heat that rose from her skin.
“Could Lynnlita borrow a damp towel, at the very least?”
“Of course, Highness.” Mina bent her head to excuse herself as she went to grab a fluffy towel from the cupboard, then wetted it in the small pool of water out the back of the healing house. “There you are,” she said, handing the towel to the princess, “Feel free to come and wet it again yourself if you need to.”
“Oh, no, Lynnlita will have a servant do that,” she said dismissively, sighing happily as she draped the towel over her hot red shoulders.
“Of course,” Mina mumbled. “When your skin’s healed, come back here and we’ll fix you a jar or two of sun cream.”
“Oh, so there is something Lynnlita can use.”
The healer shook her head. “It’s only a means of prevention, not a cure. The best advice is, of course, to just keep out of the sun.”
“Lynnlita had thought she was already doing that,” the princess lamented, stretching her arms out to inspect them again. “She’s going to get tan lines now.”
Mina shrugged and held back a giggle. She was almost sounding Raykinian with that last statement. “Nothing we can do about that either,” she informed the princess, “Just… get burnt where you haven’t been already.”
Lynnlita pulled away one of the straps of her dress. “Lynnlita may just be willing to try that,” she mused.
