“We’re not being overly cautious, are we?” Ulkar asked.

Melraan frowned. “How do you mean?”

“Well… there are three of us… and all we’re doing is buying cream. Does it really take three of us to buy cream?”

“Probably not,” Melraan conceded, dismounting so he could walk around the little village more easily, “But I was bored, and with the archers and blade archers hunting and Kurae cooking, Emon’s sadly the only one left capable of asking how much cream costs.”

“We could still get ambushed,” Emon told them, backing up why the both of them had to come as he swung down from Duster’s back.

“Sure, Emon,” Ulkar grinned, jumping to the ground and scanning the village for somewhere that might have cream. “Any idea where to look?”

Melraan scratched his chin. “A farm house would be handy,” he mused.

Emon shook his head. “I haven’t seen any cows around here though.”

“There are some goats over there,” Ulkar said, pointing to a dishevelled little place with moss growing over the roof. Several goats stood out the front, their stringy coats dripping with rain and mud. “Would goat cream’s work?”

Emon shrugged. “Kurae just said cream, he didn’t specify from what animal.”

“It can’t be that different to cow’s cream, can it?”

“You wouldn’t think so,” Melraan decided, towing Fleet towards the house with the goat tied up outside. “Goat’s cream it is then, and if it’s wrong, then Kurae can come back and find whatever he thinks is the right kind of cream.” He knocked on the door, then backed away so Emon could talk.

The door opened to reveal a typically tall Kazinian man, his clothes muddied and lank brown hair messy.

Emon pressed his hands together under his chest, then began talking in Kazinian. Ulkar recognised the words “cream” and “pay,” the latter of the two he’d learnt from the Houses scattered along the road. Apart from that though, his Kazinian was rusty at best, and he was glad to leave it up to Emon.

“Two silvers for a jar this big,” Emon relayed, holding up his hands to indicate the size of the jar. “Is that good?”

Melraan shrugged. “Who cares? We’re hardly parting with a fortune here.” He fished into his pocket and pulled out the relevant coins, handing them to Emon.

The Kazinian disappeared inside the house, then reappeared with a jar of goat’s cream. Emon handed over the coin and thanked him, then the three of them remounted and began riding back to the camp.

“Well, it looks the same,” Emon said, holding the jar up and inspecting its contents.

“Kurae’s going to hate us,” Ulkar predicted, laughing and shaking his head.

Melraan smirked back at him. “That’ll teach him to send three warriors who are clearly not chefs off to buy cream for him. What’s it for, anyway?”

“Hot chocolate,” Emon replied with a grin.

Ulkar and Melraan exchanged glances. “Oh yeah,” Melraan said, nodding sagely, “He’s going to hate us.”
