“I can’t wait to leave this Aeia-damned kingdom,” Anganur muttered. He sneezed again and coughed into a gloved hand.
Inel added a few extra feet between them so he had some chance of escaping his friend’s cold. “Quael, this kingdom is far too cold to be damned by Aeia.”
“Well somebody damned it, and until you can tell me who, I’m sticking with Aeia.”
Inel grinned, kicking at a small mound of snow on the ground. At least it looked nice today. The snow overnight had covered up the mud and slushy dead leaves of Autumn, making it seem so much cleaner and crisper. That didn’t stop it from being bitterly cold though.
“Ooh, hang on…”
Inel looked up at Anganur’s intrigued comment, following his pointing finger to where a young woman knelt by the roadside. She was dressed in white, with a fluffy fur coat around her shoulders. Her white-gloved hands scooped up some of the snow, and she blew the dusty flakes towards the two palumen, giggling and ducking her head coyly behind strawberry-blonde wisps of hair.
Anganur looked over, eyebrows raised and teeth bared in a grin.
Inel rolled his eyes. “I thought you were supposed to be married.”
“Only in Raykin, quael.” Anganur rubbed his hands together and made a beeline for the snowflake of a woman.
The other Raykinian sighed, squeezing his nose as he felt a sneeze tickling the back of his nostrils.
“How much,” Anganur asked slowly, then held up one finger, “for one night?”
The woman shrugged and shook her head, then giggled something in her native tongue. Inel could hear a negative and the word “Raykinian”. It didn’t take too much imagination to figure out what she was saying.
“Aeia damn it,” Anganur muttered. Inel folded his arms with a smirk.
“Um…” the palumen tried again. “Krizen… sen… What’s the word for night?” He turned helplessly back to Inel.
Inel shook his head with a laugh. “Oh no, you’re on your own for this one, quael.”
The Kazinian giggled again and drew herself sensually to her feet. “Sen hinu,” she said, holding her thumb and forefinger close together. “Zan.” She held up four fingers.
Inel could see Anganur’s blank face even though his back was turned. “What?” he said finally. “Come on, Inel, what’s a ‘hinu’? Is that a night?”
Inel shook his head ambiguously, his grin becoming more smug.
Anganur stuck the back of his hand up at Inel, then turned back to the Kazinian. “You know what? I don’t care. Just tell me when you go home in the morning how much it is, okay?”
Inel cocked his eyebrows as he watched his friend go, debating whether or not to tell him just what a hinu was. A heavy arm on his shoulders stopped him though.
“Well, at least someone’s going to be warm tonight,” Kaen sighed.
Inel snorted. “He’ll want to skewer her come morning. Four gold an hour, she wants.”
“And he doesn’t know?”
“Not a clue.”
