Notes~ Genesis 112. Just got this idea last night. Some time before Nol and 'may have joined up. No idea who this guy is, but he obviously wasn't there long!

Kaen brandished both his daggers threateningly, scanning the forest around him for any Kazinians who might have escaped, or were indeed still hiding in wait to attack when the Own let their guard down. There was no movement though, save for the chestnut horse that had bolted off down the road.

He nodded to himself in satisfaction just as the General gave the all clear, then wiped his daggers on his pants before shoving them back into their sheaths. Ordinarily, he’d dismount and begin removing his various throwing knives from the dead Kazinians scattered over the road, but he had something decidedly more important to attend to just now.

He nudged Storm with his heels and made his way over to the newly recruited purple-shirt.

Aarun was sitting motionless on his gelding, his hands gripping reins and saddle so tightly that his knuckles had gone white. The rest of him was quite pale as well, and his face especially was closer in colour to the Kazinians lying on the ground than the healthy golden glow of a Raykinian warrior.

Kaen slapped him upside the head to snap him out of his stupor, but the blade archer remained little more than a squishy statue.

He sighed and scratched the back of his head. He’d had a feeling this might happen. All the way up here, whenever the rest of the guys had started talking about Kazin and placing bets about what would happen this mission, Aarun had gone quiet. He didn’t want to be here.

“Aarun!” Kaen tried, waving a hand in front of his face. “Couldn’t help but notice that mine were the only knives flying just there.”

The new recruit shook his head slowly, but Kaen couldn’t be sure whether he’d actually heard what had been said. He cringed as Inel yanked his palu from one of the dead Kazinians, unable to tear his eyes away.

“I can’t do this,” Aarun whispered, his words barely audible.

“Well, you’re going to have to at least for the next two months, quael. Kill or be killed.”

The rookie shook his head again, more firmly this time. “I can’t. This isn’t… I…”

“What?” Kaen was growing impatient. “Not what you expected?”

Aarun gave a barely perceivable nod.

Kaen sighed heavily and rested his forehead in one palm. “You expected it to be the cushiest job in Raykin, didn’t you? Live in a big house with servants and imported food every night for dinner, nip up to Kazin for a month or two, and back in time for Solstice, right?”

Aarun’s eyes had turned red, and glistened with moisture.

Kaen cast his eyes skyward. “Go home, Aarun. Dagger toss champion you may be, but you’ll never be Own material.”

Aarun looked at him for the first time, his eyes pleading, but Kaen’s glare only hardened. He glanced down the way they had come, then looked around at the rest of the Own, before kicking his horse into action and tearing back to Raykin.

As soon as I clicked this fic and read the first line, War started going "Kaaaaen, Kaaaen, Kaaaaaaeeeen" in that way he does XD

Poor Aarun. I bet there's so many people who got shellshocked that way when they got into the Own. But the ones who can stick it are the ones we know and love.
