The pale-skinned girl nodded grimly, then took a slow breath and walked with conscious, deliberate steps into the building.

Nanuka did the same before following her. However many times she had come in here, she always shivered as she stepped over the threshold.

The room was at least the size of the healing house, only square and with three identical rooms leading off of it. Wooden shelves ran all through the room in carefully spaced rows, like the bookshelves in the scribes’ offices at the palace. These shelves weren’t packed with books though.

Hundreds, thousands of glass jars, tinted red from the sand they were made of, were arranged neatly on every single shelf. In every single one of them, a spider went about its daily business.

Nanuka could see Yamin pause for a few moments before she could forcer herself on.

‘This room and two of the others are for the spiders,’ Nanuka explained, now that she had found her voice and was able to keep it steady. ‘The forth is for everything else: scorpions, ants, dragonflies and the like. Since you’re training as a snake bite specialist, you won’t have to memorise every insect and arachnid in here, but at least the most common and the most deadly ones. For now though, you can just look around and get a feel for the place.’

Yamin still had her back facing Nanuka while she was talking, but the older healer knew it wasn’t out of rudeness, rather out of fascination. Her arms, which had been hugged around herself when she’d come in, now hung by her sides, far more relaxed.

Nanuka smiled quietly to herself and followed, perusing the tiny little creatures in their glass jars just as Yamin did.

‘Dreadful little one, this,’ she whispered, bending slightly to look at a little black one, clinging to the nearest side of the glass with its legs spread out evenly from its body. Yamin bent down beside her, peering in to observe its long, narrow body.

Nanuka tapped the glass once, and Yamin jumped. The spider dropped off and scuttled with startling speed around the bottom of the jar, then came to a sudden stop. The white spot was now clearly visible on the tip of its abdomen.

‘White tail,’ Nanuka said. ‘If it bites, it doesn’t just poison the flesh, but it kills it and starts eating it away. Anyone who comes into the healing house with a little hole eaten out of their skin, has probably been bitten by a white tail.’

She sighed and straightened, but Yamin didn’t stand immediately. ‘Thankfully only a few people out of every hundred have that reaction, but I don’t want to find out if I’m one of them.’

The girl shook her head slowly, jumping again as the white tail darted around in its jar again.

‘Ready to go yet?’ Nanuka asked, head cocked slightly to better catch Yamin’s eyes.

Her protégée shook her head again. Her eyes sparkled in fascination.

It's so odd that Yamin - such a sweet little one - has that morbid fascination with poisons =3

I'm sure I read somewhere that white tails get a lot of bad press, and it's actually those pointy-footed wolf spiders we should all be 'gack!'-ing at ...

Yamin's actually being a little bit creepy here! I thought she was the good gel! XD
