‘I’m not a father,’ Nolryn emphasised. ‘In no possible definition of the word am I a father.’
Gylepi shrugged and rested his beer on the bar. ‘Well you’re going to have to be sooner or later.’
‘I pick later.’
‘So you’re going to be the one to break the four thousand year long line?’ He pulled his dagger from its sheath and took aim.
‘At the moment, it’s looking like the more viable option,’ the prince admitted.
Gylepi hissed a breath through his teeth and flung his dagger at the target. ‘Dangerous, Nol, very dangerous. We’re very proud of our four thousand year line.’
Nol raised his eyebrows and drained his glass. ‘You’re going to keep bringing that into it, aren’t you?’
‘Mhmm.’ He moved aside so the prince could take up his position. ‘They’re not all bad, you know.’
Nolryn shook his head and flicked his dagger, unable to grin at his small victory. ‘I’m going to have to teach it stuff!’
‘The teaching is the fun part!’
‘Yeah, but you’re teaching her how to swing a sword. I’m going to have to teach it how to rule an entire kingdom.’ He headed for the target and yanked both daggers from the wood. ‘If Majesty can’t do that with me, how am I supposed to be able to do it with a mini me?’
‘If it’s any comfort, they don’t end up like you.’
Nol rested back against the bar and handed Gylepi his dagger. ‘Maybe somebody will overthrow me and I won’t have to think about it.’
‘You’ll still be the one breaking the four thousand year long line.’
‘Sweep the desert.’
