“I really don’t know why we still do this,” Melraan complained, drawing his sword.
Nimay shrugged and tossed her sheath to the side, smiling at her old sword master.
“They’ll forget they’re supposed to be learning and taking notes, and they’ll revert to just staring.” He rolled his shoulders to loosen up a bit.
The General cocked one eyebrow and folded her arms.
“You’ve never said that before,” the sword master accused, “I thought you enjoyed showing off.”
Melraan smiled wryly. “That was when I knew I’d win.”
Nimay bowed her head in thanks for the indirect compliment, then leaned on her sword while the sword master introduced them.
The master turned to the group of thirty or so teenage boys. Half of them were in obvious awe, the other half had their arms folded, trying to be as cool as possible in front of two of the best swordmen in the kingdom. Nimay couldn’t help but grin in amusement.
“Gentlemen,” the master began, “I’m certain you recognise these two from around the barracks, or maybe when they set depart for a noble campaign to defend our borders—” both swordsmen snorted; the master ignored them. “—Nimay and Melaan have been good enough to lend us some of their time to demonstrate to you fine upstanding young gentlemen how to wield a blade. Don’t any of you expect to be as good as either of them; they’re part of the Own. Only two other swordsmen in the kingdom can claim that.”
Melraan rolled his eyes and murmured to Nimay out the corner of his mouth. “I still say they’ll forget everything.”
