In Raykin, on the rare occasion that anything fell from the sky, the people knew about it. Even if it was four hours after midnight, the entire city would wake up and hear the rain thrumming on every surface as though the whole of the Ra-Lin had been emptied. The sound was always loudest on the papery leaves of the desert palms, tapping loudly above the rush of water that landed on stone and dust.

Rain never lasted for longer than a few minutes in Raykin, and then it would suddenly stop, leaving the remnants of the storm to drip from leaves and overhangs into puddles of water in the now-muddied streets. Raykinian moisture was a novelty, a gift from Lin, and the people treated it as such.

In Kazin, it was a rare moment when the sun shone through. While a short but sharp flood of water was the norm in Raykin, Kazinian water was entirely unpredictable, aside from the fact that it was always there. They even had different names for the different kinds of rain.

Mist and fog were the most common. A fine covering of moisture so light that it hung in the air, like dust after a herd of camels had stirred it up, only it never settled. It was cold and clammy, quite the opposite to dust.

Drizzle annoyed Nimay the most. It was everything Raykinian rain was not. It gusted down in sheets, slightly heavier than fog so that it settled and left a damp, uncomfortable feeling in her clothes. She wished the rain would just get it over with, bucket down for a few minutes then disappear and let the sun show itself. This was what annoyed her the most; it seemed as though the rain was playing tricks on her.

Showers were heavier again, then rain, and finally downpours reminiscent of those Raykin was used to.
Most curious of all, not only to Nimay but to the greater desert population, was a curious substance the Kazinians named ‘snow’. It fell lightly and silently, as did most Kazinian precipitation, but it drifted down in tiny crystalline flakes that appeared as powder on the side of the road.

On her first journey into the Kazinian mountains, Nimay had marvelled at the snow and its eerie, stark white beauty. Its powdery appearance made her think it was something entirely different to rain, but when it settled on her skin, it turned to water. Very, very cold water. It didn’t take long for the Raykinian rider to despise snow.

Just like all Kazinian weather, it was silent and stealthy, but this form of rain put on a disguise, trying to make itself look less of a nuisance than it really was.

The swordswoman wrapped her damp black cloak around her, vainly trying to keep in some form of warmth. Snow was yet another reason to hate Kazin.
