Previously on Blade Archer...
Feb. 2nd, 2013 04:13 pmHI KAEL. Wow, 'sbeen a while. So, those select few who've been following
yrae since the beginning may remember my first attempt at NaNoWriMo, Blade Archer from way back in 2004. I got roughly halfway through the story with every intention of finishing it, even though that was never going to happen in November '04. NINE YEARS LATER and we're back! Now, while I'm not as embarrassed of those first 16 chapters as I might otherwise be... they're old. Raykin was only a year and a half old. I didn't quite know how it all worked. Many many things have changed since then, so here we have a brief recap with amendments before I go on with NEW STUFF omg. You're free to read the first 16 chapters, but I won't force that on you X3
So! Kael is a nastie pastie from south of the Main Road in Ni-Yana. Three scars on the back of his wrist from stealing things (mostly mugging in the street, not so much one for breaking and entering), hates authority and the rich, he's one of those who gives the southern districts its reputation. He has a brother (Ynuk) and a sister (Elara), both older than him, who have married and moved out in the last couple of chapters, so he lives in the same one-room house with his mother, Kathani, who used to be a seamstress until she started going a bit blind. Kael's the only one to support her now, because his father died some years ago in a boating accident (though Kael suspects he was murdered.)
On the advice of the boys at the local watering hole, Kael signed up for army training at the beginning of the story and he's now in fourth year. He's done plenty of hand-to-hand combat and close-up dagger work, all of it pretty basic and beneath someone who's lived his life south of the Main Road. Then he finally started learning some new things, like swordsmanship and how to ride a camel, when he fell off the camel on his first lesson and broke his arm. So while that was healing, he was favouring his left, good arm and as a result he pretty much sucks with a sword. He's also started on archery this year but finds it pretty boring and isn't making the effort.
He has the beginnings of a love interest! Ronanen is a healer-in-training at the palace healing house. She's sweet and lovely and incredibly naive. She thinks all Kael says of his life is an exaggeration and just him teasing her naivety. Also, she 'officiated' at Kael's brother's wedding, but that was back when healers were also priestesses and they don't do that anymore. So instead Kael just invited her of his own free will. Which is cuter anyway.
Recently Kael's made two friends from first year, both archers from south of the Main Road, but not nearly so nastie pastie as he is. Kelon is a weak little bugger who can't stand up for himself and gets dragged into things he'd rather not be dragged into. Aen is Kael's age and really quite skilled with anything he sets his mind to, but he's an archer by trade. He's shy and reserved, but he admires Kael's guts and determination.
SO. We have Kael, now living to support his mum since his brother and sister left to make themselves honest livings. Last chapter he took his two new buddies out on a mugging to see if they could replace his siblings and see about making some cash. They got caught, Talons slashed each of them on the wrist, which brings Kael up to four scars. Next time he gets caught they start taking fingers off.
And there you go, all up to date! Now, nearly nine years later, we can finally move on X3
