Nimay dipped her head under yet another low-hanging branch, having made note of Nolryn’s profuse swearing at the offending branch as it introduced itself to his forehead. The loud thunk had shaken the whole branch, causing a multitude of clinging drops of moisture to rain down on half the Own.

For once though, the shower hadn’t been bitterly cold; Nimay could almost have described it as refreshing. She wondered absently how many Raykinians had ventured this far into Kazin, beyond the frigid mountains and into the tropical country, where the water was warm rather than ice-cold. It wasn’t quite as warm as it would be in Ni-Yana right now, but the rain that hung incessantly in the air—humidity, the Kazinians called it—more than made up for it. It clung to hair, skin and clothes so that Nimay may as well have been sweating as though the day were a few degrees hotter.

“I still hate Kazin,” the prince grumbled, rubbing at his forehead after hitting it on another overhead branch.

Nimay couldn’t stifle her giggle.

Nol swung around in his saddle, glaring indignantly at her. “I was swatting at another mosquito,” he argued in response to her wordless accusation, then turned forward to avoid any further injuries. “I think the trees and insects in this country pose more of a threat than its people, to be honest. Why don’t they just eradicate all the Aeia-damned mosquitoes? They can’t serve any purpose. Ow.”

Nimay snorted again.

“Branch ahead,” Melraan warned belatedly, “I believe it’s because they have about as much hope of doing that as we do of eradicating flies from Raykin. Branch.”

“Thanks,” the prince said sourly, ducking down in front of Nimay. “If it weren’t for all the Aeia-damned Houses, we wouldn’t have to go across country and we could avoid the Aeia-damned branches.”

“I don’t believe Aeia actually damned these branches, Nol.”

“I don’t care. Branches bug me.”

“If it’s any consolation, there won’t be anymore branches in a few days time. Trees are too big, so all the branches are at the top.”

“Thank Lin for that.” He went silent for a moment before slapping at another mosquito. Nimay had to wonder how many of the insects he slapped at were actually there; they didn’t seem to be bugging her at all. “Do they have more mosquitoes though?”

“Of course,” the swordsman replied casually, “And leeches, you’ll love the leeches. I have a recollection that there are so many insect species up there they haven’t got names for all of them. Branch.”

Nol fell silent again. “I still hate Kazin,” he mumbled.
