I swear to god this isn't rigged. I wouldn't be picking Haenel if I was deliberately going for the Own riders now.
Probably the headshot that's looked most like an actual person so far. Them cheekbones, Haenel, didn't know you had it in you.
NAME Haenel
WHO IS THIS PERSON One of the current swordsmen in the King's Own. Haenel is the newbie, who's only been there for one mission so far.
GENDER Male
AGE 27
BRIEF BIO Haenel's parents were travelling merchants, who briefly settled in Ni-Yana just while his mother was pregnant with him. She grew to like the idea of settling down, but when he was about three, Haenel's father uprooted again. His mother didn't want to go, though, and stayed behind in Ni-Yana while his father took him and his two brothers and went back to travelling, primarily between Raykin and Kazin. Haenel didn't particularly like the life of a merchant, especially the constant threat of bandits over the Kazinian border. He sneakily bought himself a sword for his own defence and practised with it in secret, because his father in particular didn't like the idea of combating violence with further violence. Haenel begged every time they were in Ni-Yana to join the army but his father forbade it.
When Haenel was eighteen, his family caravan suffered the inevitable and was attacked by bandits. Haenel was the only survivor, and promptly made it back to Ni-Yana to sign up for army training as soon as possible. Somehow he had time to meet and marry his wife, who died of undisclosed causes, let's say childbirth just because I haven't had anyone die of childbirth since Nol's mum, when Haenel was 24.
With all his anger and depression focussed single-mindedly now on swordplay, Haenel graduated at 25 into First Company. Two years later, the then-general of the King's Own, Rau, was killed on a mission and the First Company swordies had a tournament to see who took his place, which obviously Haenel won cos he's there now. He hated the cushy home life of First Company and wanted more action, which he knew he'd only see in the Own, given how reluctant Mithé has always been to open conflict. Haenel has only been on the one mission, Nimay's first as general, during which he broke his ribs but pretty much loved every second of it.
CHARACTER Haenel is a very highly strung individual. He's seen a lot of death in his life and, while most Raykinians in recent years have signed up to the army for the cushy home life, Haenel signed up to fight. He's always suffered a little from depression, but especially since the death of his wife and his one last chance (in his mind) to love a family again, he's been particularly bad. Hacking things with his sword, drinking to get drunk and hiding it with very quick-witted humour are his ways of coping, which is so irritatingly normal for an Own rider that only Nimay has been able to pick up so far that not all is right in Haenel's world. Trouble with being unable to speak, though, is that it's easy for Haenel to ignore her when she tries to mention it to him. Because of the way he got into the Own, basically just by default to replace the last swordie to die, he doesn't feel like he really belongs there. He shows off just like the other swordies, but it's just another act.
POINTS OF INTEREST
I don't like him. I think it's because he's so false and hides everything. I just want to shake him and yell SAY SOMETHING YOU IDIOT THIS ISN'T HEALTHY.
Haenel had thought maybe his mother would come back out of the woodwork when he got into the Own but so far she hasn't made an appearance. Still, early days yet, he hasn't even been there a year.
The other Own riders are a bit worried about him and his enthusiasm for killing stuff.
After his early life being spent half in Kazin, Haenel is fluent in Kazinian with an accent that even the locals can hardly pick.
He still calls Nolryn 'Highness'. Pisses Nol off no end because he feels like he'll never get close with the guy if he's only ever going to see him as a prince rather than a person.
