Character 100-ish 080: Adviser Haoi
Jun. 28th, 2014 12:03 amStarted on Monday when the power went out, then Shwiggy died and I didn't get time to get back to it until last night and still didn't have time/effort to make her profile. SO FINALLY Haoi!

It's like a neat lady Nolryn cut :D
NAME Adviser Haoi
WHO IS THIS PERSON Chief advisor to King Mithé of Raykin
GENDER Female
AGE 51
BRIEF BIO Haoi was born and raised in a modest lower-middle-class share-house in Ni-Yana (whoo hypenations). The house was shared by four families, all with many varied jobs from staff at the palace to market gardeners and tavern workers. Haoi saw a great cross-section of the city and she grew up fast, not because she was forced to but because she just enjoyed adult conversation. She liked listening to their successes and their anecdotes from work, and she liked trying to help after someone had had a day with crappy customers or thievery. As she grew into her teenage years, she became particularly vocal during political conversations.
It was one such conversation in a pub, something about education, that had Haoi overheard by one of the then-ministers at the palace. Seeing potential in the girl, the minister invited her to the palace where she first started work as a scribe. No, she didn't know how to write yet, but that doesn't matter because the first part is just copying deteriorating documents, so she got used to the letters while still being useful, and learned how to properly read and write in the process. She was soon allowed into meetings to take minutes there, though it was hard for her to bite her tongue at the meetings that got her blood boiling. Innnn fact she started muttering things in her corner after a couple of months. This got noticed in the scribes' office, where she was allowed to be more vocal, but rather than being chucked out, Haoi was promoted to the Ministry for Education.
For a decade or so she bounced around the various ministries, while also reading up on history and foreign languages and agriculture and taxes and everything.
As any good minister does, Haoi made a strong professional relationship with King Mithé and Queen Alurié. She was particularly instrumental when Alurié died, taking charge when Mithé couldn't and in the end pulling him out of his depressive rut. Mithé recognised this himself pretty quickly, and promoted her to ministerial adviser to the king, a role which Haoi grabbed at with both hands. She's been Mithé's chief advisor for the last 18 years--certainly as long as Nolryn can remember--and expects to keep doing the same when Nolryn takes the throne.
In her personal life, Haoi married late at 26 to a young man of 20 who later went on to become the Minister for Education. They were both far too career-focused to want kids--and probably too stressed for Haoi to be able to conceive anyway--though she regrets that a little now that she's too old to try. Still, she's halfway been Nol's mother over the years of his growth, so she hasn't been completely devoid of children in her life.
CHARACTER Hard, highly analytical, never switches off. Haoi lives and breathes politics. She loves the intrigue, working out solutions that will please both parties, all of it. Even sitting down with a beer at the end of the day, Haoi will drift the conversation back around to whatever the major event of the day has been. Having known Mithé for so long, and seen Nolryn grow up practically from birth, Haoi has a soft spot for the two royals. She's not above hugging either of them, either in support or in celebration.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Nothing romantic between her and Mithé. They're both dedicated to their respective partners and have never seen each other as anything but professional friends.
Nol still mocks them, though.
As he does Mithé, Nol frustrates the ever-living piss out of Haoi. She can see his potential, how he really does understand the responsibility and genuinely wants to do the right thing, but Lin's blood he cocks it up a lot. In her frustration, she just sits tight-lipped and explains calmly and rationally where he went wrong and what he should have done instead.
I'm going to do so much more with her in the rewrite. Her character's been solid for a while but with a healer and a warrior as my POV characters, she barely has a chance to come up. I plan on Mithé being a POV character in the rewrite so she'll get more say.
