It was a simple mixture, really. There were only four ingredients, and two of them bore the sole purpose of making the mixture taste nice and give it volume. Despite the simplicity of the sweet, creamy brew, it was one of the more valuable liquids in the kingdom, right up there with water and beer.
Yamin was quite proud of herself for having invented the hangover cure. Nobody ever asked her what was in it, and if they did, she’d just shrug noncommittally and busy herself with something else. They’d probably run halfway to Tsayth if they knew. For the head healers of the various towns, to whom she had taught the art of hangover medicine, it tended to deter them from excess alcohol.
The cure was primarily coconut milk, with a spoon or two of honey to give it a sweet taste, but the active ingredients were snake venom.
It was common knowledge, among the healers at least, that the venom of numerous varieties of Raykinian snake had healing properties, particularly when mixed together. However, when members of the general public asked fearfully if the medicine they were being given contained snake venom, the healers laughed it off and told them it was an urban myth.
Only the better healers in the kingdom were allowed to use snake venom in their healing, since they required such precise dosages, and a drop or two over would have quite a damaging effect. Not death, necessarily, but that was certainly a possibility. The hangover cure was no exception.
Many head healers of small towns and villages didn’t trust themselves to attempt the cure themselves, for fear of what it could and would do if they made the wrong measurements.
A single drop of venom from the thrai was enough to kill the strongest warrior in little more than ten minutes. A cup of hangover cure had three. When mixed with exactly three times the amount of venom from a white-tipped sand viper, the two clear and deadly liquids formed a milky substance. Both venoms cancelled the deadly effects of each other and instead leeched alcohol from the blood stream.
However, any traces of venom that didn’t react would have the same effect had it come straight from a set of fangs. It was this that stopped many healers from even attempting to learn how to make it for something so trivial as a hangover.
Yamin, however, had had enough of hungover warriors lying groaning in the healing house for half the day, and had taken it upon herself to develop the mixture. As far as she was concerned, the benefits were more than rewarding.
