Character 145: 139 King Mithé
Sep. 28th, 2014 09:15 pmMan, Mithé has been through so many redesigns, mostly because I've never known how to draw old dudes before. But now I do yaaaay.

Yeah that's him. Previously this though that was just his clothes, I can't find any arts of him. Then he got a clothing redesign and looked like this. So then he looked like this because lol old people with my previous style, hah. AND NOW HE LOOKS LIKE THIS YAY. Greying at the temples, but he's never had as much sun as the average Raykinian so he looks his age as we understand it.
NAME King Mithé of Raykin
WHO IS THIS PERSON Once again, clue's in the title! Also, funnily enough, Nolryn's father.
GENDER Male
AGE 53
BRIEF BIO Mithé was born a noble in Ni-Yana's high class 30th district, where his father was the minister for transport and his mother the supervisor of domestic affairs at the villa. Despite his father's occupation in politics, Mithé began army training as a fifteen year old, training as a blade archer. Because. Honestly I've never really figured that out. I think maybe he was so discouraged by his father bemoaning the future queen that he had no interest in working for her.
But Mithé has always had a strong political streak, whether he tried to deny it or not. When, after six months of training, Princess Alurié approached him to get him to invite her to dinner, he couldn't resist this opportunity to try and get his future queen to take some responsibility.
Alurié was pretty much smitten, and Mithé himself was quite astounded at having royal attention, too. Of course, both his parents and Alurié's were pretty keen for them to get together. And, y'know, everyone else in the palace who knew him. Let's just say Mithé felt the pressure.
As he got to know her, though, he came to see there was more to her than what everyone else saw. He found himself comforting her as often as he was advising her and, in doing so, he came to love her. Mithé proposed on the Winter Solstice before his 20th birthday, the third anniversary of their meeting, and they subsequently married the full moon after his Mithé's hrai-dani.
So suddenly Mithé was crown prince of Raykin. He kept up with his army training, though, because Mithé can't leave anything half-done, and so graduated into Third Company. He kept up with training for a year or so afterwards, but at the death of Alurié's father he realised he wouldn't have time to do both things at once and dropped the blade archery. When her mother died two years later, Mithé was ready. They were crowned king and queen ten days after the queen's death.
For the next five years, Mithé worked at basically tidying up after Alurié's messes and getting her to see where she went wrong. And then, of course, Alurié fell pregnant with Nolryn and died giving birth.
Mithé was the only one to mourn her. He didn't see his new son until some time after his birth, because he wanted to see his son, not the child who had caused his wife's death. He was trying to do that all through Nolryn's young childhood, but it wasn't really until the baby started growing into an actual person, with whom he could have a conversation, that Mithé started seeing him as his son.
When Nolryn was seven, Mithé took him with the King's Own on a royal meet and greet, meeting all the royalty in neighbouring kingdoms. The year-long journey was a great bonding experience for Mithé, even if Nol didn't realise it himself.
As a ruler, Mithé has been very conservative, brought on by the turmoil of the previous monarch and trying to prevent it from happening again with the next. As a result, there was never a war under his reign and everyone was pretty happy with how things were going. It was clearly going to be a while until Nol took over, so nobody was scared of anything just yet.
And then Silent Harmony happened and Mithé's reign came to an end. Suckage.
CHARACTER Mithé is patient to a fault, having dealt first with Alurié and then with Nolryn. He's never allowed his power to go to his head. It came on him so suddenly that he consciously forced himself to manage it. Mithé is unambitious. He feels more as though he's caretaker of the throne until it can be returned to Qewir's bloodline with Nolryn and as such, he's incredibly patient with his son.
Mithé is completely bound by duty. If he feels his emotions getting in the way of a situation, he'll take a break to let them run their course, then get back to work with a clear head.
Mithé doesn't believe in sugar-coating the truth. He's very blunt, refreshingly at times, scathingly at others. He believes in diplomacy, but recognises when it won't work or when the opposing party just doesn't deserve any. He will lie if he thinks it will get things done more efficiently, or keep the truth from someone (not just from his son, despite what Nolryn thinks), but he always has good reason to.
Not at all aggressive, Mithé much prefers to negotiate and would only use steel as an absolute last resort, be it in a pub or in politics. He's a strong believer that, if he has a reputation for holding his temper, then when he really does get angry people will take notice of it. The same mentality applies to swearing. If Mithé swears, the situation is serious.
To Mithé, the purpose of life is to improve the lives of others, so he takes this philosophy with him to work. Mithé doesn't strive to be remembered—again, in his eyes he's only the caretaker of the throne—he just wants to keep Raykin going strong and leave his son with something he can manage on his own. If there's a financial situation, raising taxes is Mithé's last resort.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Mithé has a birth mark in the form of a white patch of skin on the back of his head.
Mithé never makes promises, because he can't be certain he'll fulfil them. He doesn't let other people make promises to him, either.
Mithé is a serious man, but he does try to lighten the mood at times with bad, sometimes bad dad jokes.
He doesn't enjoy social events because of so many people who are blatantly just trying to win his favour and, inevitably, the treasury's money. He does understand the need for such events, though, and treats them as an opportunity to learn what issues are really affecting Raykinians.
Mithé twiddles his thumbs when he's thinking seriously about something. The action makes Nolryn nervous. As his temper rises, his voice starts to shake slightly, his hand gestures become wider and more vigorous, and he wipes his palms on his robes more often. Only those who know him sell can spot this, though, and he'll rarely actually lose his temper.
While Mithé loved Alurié dearly, he recognised she did not make a strong queen. Her life had been to sheltered to know what people actually wanted, and Mithé was the only one whose suggestions she listened to. He misses her, if bitter-sweetly.
Mithé loves his son, but he's incredibly frustrated by him a lot of the time. Nolryn gives him both his proudest moments, when he really looks like he could be the king Mithé wants him to be, and his moments of greatest embarrassment, especially when Nolryn openly ridicules the minister or foreign dignitary he's talking to. He's exceedingly patient, but at times it's all he can do to just rub his brow and start from the beginning. He refuses to admit Nolryn is a lost cause, but he certainly worries about him.
Mithé thinks of Yamin as his daughter, and he pities her for having lost her family. However, in his efforts to be a father figure to her, he hasn't realised that Yamin doesn't want her own father to be replaced. She wishes for their relationship to remain professional. While she resents his efforts to replace her father, she respects him greatly as a ruler.
Mithé also treats Nimay as a daughter, and she is much more willing to accept him when he assumes the role having no knowledge of her own father.
Mithé hasn't used his daggers in close combat in 25 years, but he's still competitive in a game of dagger toss.
River salmon and palace brew is Mithé's favourite meal. Having grown up outside palace walls, he's grown up thinking palace brew is a bit exotic and special, unlike Nolryn who has a bit of a stigma against it. He also likes tropical fruits from Kazin, especially mango with chicken.
Mithé is always very well spoken and enunciates more than most Raykinians. He speaks in a deep baritone voice, and is actually quite an accomplished singer.
