…I don't take much pride in what I do. I don't like to show off. I do like to beat off new challengers, though. Confirmation that I'm good enough.

Every year is an improvement on the one before, so my twelfth has been the best so far. I like to be the focus of everyone's attentions instead of Mother, as she always is the rest of the time. For my twelfth, she made a point of sitting in the back to let me have my day. I seem to have also reached the age when the commanders and politicians alike are courting my favour. I think I got twice as many presents as I did for my eleventh. A magnificent brooch from Kanera, a really sweet perfume from Sahid (I didn't know he knew about such things, but it seems even he can surprise me), a parrot in my Colours from Commander Zakaariss that has a deep, resonant call that gives me goosebumps… I felt special. It was a good day.

Going home. I don't know what I'll find there. I know there'll be no Mother or Father, no Sahid. I don't know what the Bouquet will have done to my home. I'm scared that they'll be better rulers than me, that people will forget me, get used to the assassins and see me as the change. Ministers already treat me like a child. What if they see me as the evil change?

Haha wow, right. Well, hasn't happened yet. I know most my age, royalty especially, are already having kids, but I—I'm not there yet. I know there have been royal bastards in the past and people got over it, but I'm not going to give anyone the satisfaction of having yet another thing to criticise me for. Yes, I'm dodging the question. I'm a politician; I do that. FINE. I've imagined it plenty of times with Nimay, unlikely as I know that is now, but it's in my head so that's all right. Also, because it's in my head, I imagine it back home, in my bed, no other outside influences at all. Just us. No words, no insecurities… just us.

…Screwing up. Just anything that goes wrong. I want to stop doing that, and I swear I'm trying. I learn from my mistakes, I do, I just keep making new ones. I rush into things thinking I don't have time to plan it out properly, or go in thinking I HAVE planned everything properly, only to find a problem staring me in the face that I would have seen if I'd just looked harder to start with.
And there's the whole crumbling into a mess of pain and fear whenever I go near a building made of dark stone. It'd be nice if I could stop doing that, too.

Believe it or not, magic. Part of my stubbornness, I know. I knew it was inevitable but still tried to ignore it anyway because that's me. But if I'd started learning it better right from the beginning then I would have at least recognised that Yan's voice in my head wasn't mine. I first got my suspicions when I was delirious in the desert, having somehow found Nimay and Yamin literally in the middle of nowhere. Nobody has that sense of direction except desert people.
And maybe if I'd known about it before then, then… yeah. Who knows? Only myself to blame.

I don't know that I've ever been turned on enough to be turned off again. But that said, probably smelly feet. It's just not a nice smell.

Carry on as normal, pretty much, but I do make sure people know I've got a cold, partly for sympathy, partly to stop any excuses others might have for staying home sick. I've never been so sick that I couldn't get out of bed, except when I was bitten by a snake as a kid, but that's less sick and more… poisoned. Can't remember much of that, to be honest, just the smell of the healing house even more strongly than normal. They have a lot of herbs in those little side rooms.

It's no 'little thing'.
In seriousness, though, my fingers. They're my livelihood, after all, and I've trained them well over the years. I've never broken any of them, though there are plenty of old scars between them from the early years of blade archery, and almost always a healing scab or two. Nobody's perfect, but I'm pretty confident my fingers are among the most deft in Raykin.
