Notes~ 15 minute fic, word 77. First time to Kazin, aww~

~ ~ ~

Nimay ran her eyes over the list of things she was expected to pack into the saddlebags for the journey to Kazin. She and Nolryn had each been given a copy of the list, but the other riders of the Own had been able to memorise what was on it, having made the journey several times before.

Nol had told her he’d made the journey with the Own once before, but he had been too young to remember much beyond the incessant rain, and being tossed from a Kazinian horse.

For her first time to the foreign kingdom, it seemed an incredibly long list for what the General had referred to as the ‘bare essentials’. She had to grin when she saw that the list was topped with ‘sword; dagger; bow; quiver’ when any other list for a desert journey would inherently have begun with ‘water’.

Nol appeared beside her, frowning at his own list. “I honestly think half the things on here are listed to make the thing as dauntingly long as possible,” he complained. He pointed at one of the items. “I mean, really, does Rau seriously think we’re going to forget item number twenty-three? I’m hardly going to walk over the bridge and say, ‘hold up a moment, boys, I’ve left my horse behind.’”

Nimay snorted, glancing at the aforementioned item. She’d somehow missed that on her earlier perusal.

“So, bar the horse, how’s your list looking?”

The swordswoman grinned, then indicated the few items that remained uncrossed on her list.

Nolryn looked them over. “I picked up two bottles of insect repellent from the healing house earlier; you never get burnt, so you won’t need sun cream, and… do you even own a bow and quiver?”

Nimay nodded feebly; she’d been given them with her sword upon being accepted into the Own a few months ago, but had since ‘misplaced’ them.

The prince bopped her with his list. “Like it or not you’re going to have to take it. Chances are you won’t even need to fire it, what with four guys in the Own who use them. Look at it this way; at least you can use magic with it this time.”

Nimay gave him a withering look.

Nol shrugged defensively. “If it makes you feel any better, I have to take my sword.”

She glanced at the sword hanging at his waist, then snorted again. Blades suited him about as much as arrows suited her. She sighed and rolled up the list, preparing for the search for her ‘lost’ bow.
