Nimay had been watching the pikemen train for much of the day, making note of their technique and hoping she might be able to replicate it. She’d decided after a month of pikes and daggers, and a further year of archery, that ranged weaponry required either natural skill or a lot of extra training. Given that she had shown little prowess with either of the weapons, she figured she’d need to put in extra work before she could be competent with them.
Now, the pikemen had all cleared, leaving Nimay alone in the range. Sighing resolutely, she stood and selected three practice pikes from the bin by the benches. Two of the pikes she laid by her feet, the third she hefted in her right hand, feeling the balance as the pike master had instructed her and focusing on the target.
The pikemen aimed at targets similar to the ones used in the archery range, but with three extra rings and a cross of red thumbprints instead of the single Middle Red. Only one pike would fit on a single spot, so more had been added to make training more about the throwing and less about walking to the targets, yanking out the pike then walking back again.
Nimay crouched low and held the pike to her shoulder, her other hand out in front to steady herself, then she lunged forward, thrusting the pike at the target.
The long stick clattered butt first into the dust, a good three paces short of the target.
The warrior-in-training huffed quietly, then picked up the second pike, repeating the action but aiming higher this time. This time, the metal-tipped point came in contact with the target, but there wasn’t enough power behind it to keep it embedded. Instead, it dropped to the ground and rolled along to bump into the first.
Nimay raked her fingernails through her hair, breathing deeply to try and calm her already growing frustration. Patience had never been a particularly strong trait of hers. At least in close combat, with sword, dagger and even pike, she could spot what she was doing wrong and could correct it, but the ranged weapons just wouldn’t cooperate.
She hefted the third pike in her hand and forced it at the target with all the strength she could muster, only to see the action of the second pike repeated.
She growled deeply in the back of her throat, calling the three sticks back to her with her magic. Gripping all three in one hand, she ignored technique and threw them all at the target, forcing them into the soft wood with magic rather than muscle.
She nodded and grinned with satisfaction when the three pike butts wobbled in the air, their noses deep in three respective red thumbprints.
‘When I’ve passed the exams,’ she muttered to herself, ‘They’ll have a hard time convincing me to use a projectile without magic.’
