Yamin pulled her blanket up over her head, shuddering when her bare shoulder was exposed to the cold air of the mid-winter night. She accidentally poked her sister with a toe, and felt the other girl recoil and shiver in response. A faint grumble, muffled by sleep, came from the lump of blankets masquerading as Nimay.
Yamin stared at the shape in the dark for a moment, debating whether or not to cuddle up with her twin for warmth. It wasn’t as though she’d be waking her up—she knew Nimay was awake as well as she knew she was unimpressed at having a cold toe poke her leg.
Evidently, Nimay was thinking the same thing, and wriggled over to press her back against Yamin’s chest. She huffed quietly, indicating she hadn’t yet forgotten the toe. Yamin deliberately curled her feet around so as not to risk further poking.
They lay like that for a few minutes before they both started shivering again. While her front was warm, Yamin’s back was still only covered by a comparatively thin blanket. She nudged her twin and motioned down the stairs.
Nimay lay still for a moment, considering the proposition, then pulled away from her sister, wrapping the blanket around her as she stood. Yamin hugged her own blanket tighter around her shoulders and padded quietly down the stairs. The rough, woollen material hushed against the dusty mud brick. Her feet were so cold the solid steps almost felt warm beneath them.
The two girls padded into their parents’ room and nestled between them both.
Yamin sighed with contentment as she felt her mother’s arms wrap around her, along with half her blanket.
Riona kissed her neck once, then whispered in her ear. “No cold feet, okay?”
The young girl grinned and curled her feet away again. Within minutes, she was asleep.
