Alurié dabbed her serviette primly over her lips before laying it down beside her empty plate. It wasn’t often she ate outside the palace walls, but that wasn’t to say she didn’t enjoy such occasions. She smiled sweetly and hooked a stray curl behind her ear.

“My greatest thanks to you for freeing me of the palace walls tonight, Mithé,” she said warmly.

Her companion smiled as he finished off his meal. To Alurié, it had seemed as though the blade archer had been unusually quiet and distant all night. He’d fumbled with his cutlery, and with Alurié’s chair as he’d pulled it out for her to sit on, hinting that he was nervous as well.

Raykin’s Crown Princess was not a slow-witted girl. She knew exactly what was on her boyfriend’s mind.

“Your hrai-dani is to be celebrated in a month’s time, is it not?” she asked casually.

Mithé nodded. “It is,” he said, as though he almost felt he had to say something.

Alurié grinned to herself. “And the full moon follows it two days later?”

The blade archer paused momentarily, then narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the young princess. Alurié shook her head in the picture of innocence, but she could almost see the cogs turning behind Mithé’s eyes.

“Yes…” he answered carefully, feigning ignorance as badly as Alurié was.

The princess raised her eyebrows expectantly. “Well?”

Mithé pointed an accusing finger at the girl. “Are you answering my question before I’ve had a chance to pose it?”

Alurié opened her mouth and put a hand on her chest, recoiling in mock disbelief. “You’ve had plenty of chances to pose your question this evening, young man.”

The blade archer sighed quietly, then reached out to cup Alurié’s delicate hand in his own callused ones. It was a move that obviously took a great deal of courage, and it made the princess’ chest tighten slightly and her heart skip a beat.

“Alurié,” he began, then cleared his throat. “Alurié, Crown Princess of Raykin, would you give me the greatest honour of becoming your husband?”

The princess gave a watery smile, barely able to see Mithé through her tears. She could tell by his damp palms though that it was one of the hardest things he had ever done. One did not lightly propose to the kingdom’s heir.

Now though, it seemed as though ranking had been forgotten. They were both reduced to merely being lovers. A boy proposing to a girl, and nothing more.

Alurié gave a small nod. “Of course,” she whispered, then reached across the table to hug her new fiancée, and future king of Raykin.
