Yamin folded her arms and tapped at her elbow with a finger while she frowned at the soldier’s swollen forearm.

“It’s broken, isn’t it?” Garuk asked. There was some vague hope in his voice, that maybe it was just badly bruised.

Yamin nodded absently; the state of the archer’s arm wasn’t what was on her mind.

“Aeia,” Garuk swore to himself. “We leave in a week. There’s no way I can ride for three months with it broken, let alone draw a bow.”

The healer nodded resolutely to herself. She had to admit, she’d almost been waiting for someone with a broken arm for her to experiment on, but she was expecting someone with a little less responsibility lying on their shoulders than one of the members of the Own. Still, there seemed little other choice.

She’d always hated setting broken bones manually. It seemed as though half the time it did more harm than good, especially as she had an yrae stone that should be able to fix the bone for her.

She smiled encouragingly at the archer, then gently took the broken arm in her fingers. Garuk winced slightly at her touch, but he didn’t complain.

Yamin took a deep breath, trying to think what exactly was involved in mending the bone. As her fingers carefully kneaded at the break, it seemed that the bone was not too badly broken. It was at least still partly attached, more bent than broken.

She loosened her shoulders and let the magic of the yrae stone flow into Garuk’s arm. She smiled in satisfaction when she felt the bone begin to move under the skin, being knitted back together by the magic.

Garuk, on the other hand, was less than impressed. He yelled as loudly as he would have had Yamin been setting the bone the traditional way, involuntarily yanking his arm back and almost gripping it with his other hand before regaining control of his reflexes.

When she had finished, Yamin looked expectantly at the archer, hoping the pain had at least been worth it. The bone felt fine under her fingers, but it took the word of the patient to know for certain.

Garuk frowned and ran his fingers through damp hair, then looked down at his arm, flexing his fingers and rubbing at the bone. When he looked back at the healer, his grin was filled with gratitude.

“Fingers are a bit tingly,” he admitted, “But Lin’s blood I love that stone.”

Only when the archer had left did Yamin start feeling dizzy. She leant back against the bed block, closing her eyes against the black flowers that clouded her vision and holding a shaking hand to her temple to keep her head from spinning. She could hear wind rushing past her ears, but her hair and clothes still clung to her sweat-slicked skin.

It took a few moments for the dizziness to pass, but her limbs were still incredibly heavy. She dared not shake her head for fear of the dizziness returning. Yrae stones were indeed complex things. It would take her some time to master.
