The sharp morning sunlight shone in through the gap between the tent and the sand, piercing Haela’s eyes and waking her. She clenched her eyes and groaned quietly, not ready to get up just yet.
She shuffled back slightly, moulding her body to Kulo’s behind her.
Kulo’s indecipherable mumble told her he was still asleep, but even in his subconscious, his arm squeezed tighter around Haela’s waist. She gripped his hand with her own, smiling warmly as she listened to his steady breathing.
For so long, she had been completely alone, with nothing but the wretched yrae stone as company. Almost a year ago now, the desert tribe had picked her up and welcomed her warmly into their family group. Suddenly, she had not only a family who cared for her as the riverfolk never would, but she had Kulo.
Kulo made her forget the stone that hung around her ankle. As much pain as it had caused her, it had curiously also been her release. Now, Kulo took that position, and Haela was more than grateful. They’d only been a part of each other’s life for a year, and yet Haela couldn’t imagine life without him. She hoped Kula felt the same way.
The desert hunter’s strong arm gripped her more forcefully in a morning embrace, his hand sliding over the smooth skin of her stomach.
Haela’s hair prickled pleasantly as Kula’s fingers pulled it back from her ear, allowing him to kiss her neck.
“Morning,” he whispered into her ear. Such a simple word, but the way he just barely breathed it made it seem as though it was meant only for Haela to hear.
She turned her head, looking up into his dark face, lit golden by the dawn sunlight, then kissed him gently. “Love you,” she whispered.
Kulo smiled and rolled her onto her back, running his lips over her neck. The warm prickles washed over her skin again, tickled by Kulo’s rough stubble.
“Love you more,” he mumbled against her skin.
