Notes~ kawa~ inspiration #25. First time to Kazin for the new recruits. Well, not technically for Nol, but he wouldn't remember much of his first trip. First as part of the Own, anyway. Issa bit short, but~ whatever. Couldn't really think of anything to add onto the end.

Clouds swarmed overhead, concealing the horizon with fog and bringing an eerie, dead silence to the barren landscape. The hard, stony ground, scattered with clumps of brown grass, could have been golden did the sun decide to penetrate the clouds, but instead it looked cold and grey. A pale lake, reflecting the dismal grey of the sky above, lay nestled in the valley to Nimay’s right.
Up ahead, Nimay spotted a line of large stones, about twenty paces apart, glaring stark white against the dull grey earth. She nudged Nolryn beside her with her toe to get his attention, then nodded towards the line of white stones.
The archer frowned at the stones. “Is that the boundary?” he asked the General.
Rau nodded, but didn’t say anything. Somehow, words seemed unwelcome here. The damp air stole them from the speaker’s mouth.
Nimay frowned as the small party approached the border into Kazin. The stones were so unnatural. Such a stark white, so smooth, completely uniform size, as though they had been specially carved for the purpose. There were black marks on them, too. Three black circles, all facing the Raykinian side of the border. She leant forwards in her saddle to better see the stones, then felt her breath catch in her throat.
These markers weren’t stones, but skulls.
She heard Nol swear quietly under his breath when he recognised what they were.
“Welcome to Kazin,” Rau said, his voice one of ironic cheer, then turned around to face the two new recruits. “I wouldn’t worry too much; they’re only dangerous if you’re innocent.”
