Yamin had spotted the pale grey-green chrysalis almost two weeks ago. It clung by a tiny thread to the yucca behind their house, and only the black and yellow specks had betrayed its existence. She hadn’t seen the grubby little yellow and black caterpillar as it spun its cocoon, but she was determined to see the butterfly emerge.
Every day for the last two weeks she had crouched down by the yucca, wishing that every time it shook it was because the butterfly inside was moving, not because the wind was blowing it.
Nimay had joined her on a few occasions, but she grew bored quickly. She didn’t have quite the same patience as her twin. If she wasn’t prepared to wait patiently as Yamin did, she wasn’t going to see it. This would be Yamin’s own secret, watching the emergence of the butterfly.
She caught a slight movement from the chrysalis, but put it down to being the wind again. Only there was no wind.
The cocoon shook again, more forcefully this time, and the young girl instantly perked up. Finally!
A few minutes passed, and the butterfly’s head emerged from the grey-green pupa. Yamin’s eyes were glued to the chrysalis as it bobbed in the wind, the butterfly emerging with careful, staccato movements.
Once it had emerged, it clung to the side of the discarded cocoon, its wings hanging downwards like tiny pieces of crumpled parchment. Slowly, the wings flattened out, brilliant orange striped with vibrant black.
The monarch butterfly rested for a few minutes longer, making sure its wings were fully formed, before it flashed them open in a beautiful display, then flitted off, leaving the chrysalis behind.
Yamin watched as the butterfly danced erratically through the air, its bright orange and black stark against the rich blue sky. Once it had disappeared from sight, she took the discarded chrysalis delicately in her fingers, cradling it gently, then ran off to find her sister.
