‘Goddesses’ blood that’s a lot of people.’

Nimay’s eyes were wide as she stared down at the throng of people present for the prince’s hrai-dani. It seemed as though not just the entire city of Ni-Yana, but half the kingdom was packed into the palace courtyard. Not even the Summer and Winter Solstices drew this many people into the grounds, and the sun hadn’t even set yet.

The noise was incredible. Even though they were speaking not much louder than normal volume, the palace’s outer walls seemed to amplify it.

The swordswoman shook her head and repositioned her cream and red ceremonial robes more comfortably over her wing clasps. One slip and half the kingdom would know instantly. She didn’t want to predict the reaction yrae magic would gain. It was bad enough in the rumour stage, let alone actual fact.

She rested her arms on the windowsill, looking down again on the writhing mass of people, wondering how in Lin’s name the kitchens planned on feeding them all as per Raykinian tradition. If they were all hoping for a glass of palace brew, the overwhelming majority of them would probably be disappointed, though it did answer the question of why said brew had been almost rationed over the past few months.

The healing house had, naturally, been evacuated for the day, excepting incidents occurring during the celebrations. Their operations had instead been moved to the other, smaller healing houses scattered around the city.

She noticed that a number of people were pointing up towards the two towers that stood at the front of the palace, the southern-most of which held her bedroom from where she now watched the amassed Raykinians. Some were waving madly at either of the two towers, assuming, rightly or wrongly, that Nimay was in them. She raised one bemused eyebrow and shook her head, then turned from the window to make her way down the stairs.

She didn’t use the stairs often, only when she could see someone in the courtyard who didn’t already know about her magic and couldn’t be bothered waiting for them to pass so she could simply fly out.

Even descending the stairs and walking along the corridors inside the palace, she could hear the incredible throng of people outside. The sound, now with no visuals to go with it, gave her an uneasy feeling. Every member of the palace guard was on duty tonight, but there was no way they could keep that unbelievable mob out of the palace if they all got the same idea at once.

As she neared the great dining hall, where all the invited guests were to gather, more and more palace staff were seen strutting through the corridors on some errand or another. Guards were stationed more and more frequently along the passageways, becoming less and less inconspicuous. While those further from the hall leaned casually against the wall, arms folded and generally looking annoyed that they weren’t enjoying the celebrations with everyone else, the guards stationed to either side of the hall’s impressive doors held their naked sword blades in their hands, giving Nimay that same uncomfortable feeling again.

She took a deep breath, smiled pleasantly at the rather imposing figures of the guards, and entered the great dining hall.
